They both possess a few star players and a respected coach, are very young, and have always been incredible ri vals. , That’s where the similarities end. On the court it’s a whole different story. And for the USC men’s basketball team, it’s not a pret ty one. After traveling to the infamous University of Florida O’Connell Center only to get routed 87-67, the Game cocks’ chance at a successful postseason are rapidly grow ing dimmer. The stare for Florida were shining as sophomores Mike Miller and Teddy Dupay each ignited the crowd and com bined for 29 points and 10 assists. Right behind them was freshman prodigy Donnell Harvey with six points and a game-high six rebounds. The sky on the Carolina side of the court was dark, however, as they watched their premier players sink no more than six points apiece. Senior Herbert Lee Davis was held to a single basket and freshman team mate Chuck Eidson recorded only one more than that. Continuing his hot streak for the past four games, however, was sophomore Jamel Bradley. Leading his team and tying for the game-high with 15 points, Bradley sparked an 18-7 run with three 3-point ers. It was enough to give his team a three point lead over the No. 8 team in the na tion, but not enough to keep it. Immediately after that, USC turned over the ball five times and went 1 -of-8 from the field, allowing the Gators to take off on a 17-2 run of their own. South Carolina head coach Eddie Fogler gave all the credit to the dominating Gators. “They play the game better than anyone in the Southeastern Conference,” he said. “I don’t know who second would be, but they’re the best at it. They have a chance Saturday to prove they are the best team.” One thing the Gators weren’t prepared for was the ef fort they would see erupt off the South Carolina bench. Outscoring their Florida counterparts 37-25, the Game cocks playing off the pine will hopefully continue to con tribute to their team heading into Saturday’s matchup against Vanderbilt. With the win, the Gators crowned themselves as par tial SEC champions and will look to be undisputed champs in their last regular season game against Kentucky. As for the future, the Gators can look toward its four freshmen and three sophomores and see more and more ranked seasons ahead of them. South Carolina youngsters can only dream and hope to turn their struggling team around in the years around the comer. But with three freshmen and one sophomore mak ing up four of the starting five, there seems to be nothing to worry about. ^ The Gamecocks close out the regular season at Van derbilt Saturday. Barring a miraculous run to the SEC Tour nament Championship next weekend in Atlanta, USC bas ketball will close the door on the 1999-2000 season. The 12-0 Gamecocks are off to their best start since 1994, and with wins Friday and Saturday, will set the USC record for most consecutive wins to start a season. The previous record is 13, set in 1980 under then-head coach June Raines. Although the all-time series be tween the teams is tied at two, USC split a two-game series with Radford last year, winning the first game but dropping the second. Neither of the two squads made the postseason in 1999, but look to improve that record in 2000. Righthander Kip Bouknight will get the start for the No. 16 Gamecocks in the first game, slated for today at 3 p.m. at Sarge Frye Field. The junior All-American candidate is 4-0 this sea son with a 1.52 ERA. He has not al lowed a walk yet this year and has struck out a combined 17 batters in his last two games. Radford will be led by head coach Lew Kent, who returns 24 suirtcrs from last year's 17-35 squad. Although the Highlanders finished sixth in the Big South Confer ence in 1999, they feature three big guns in their bat ting order. Senior David Gotauco sported a hefty .315 aver age last season, knocking three homers and 26 RBIs while calling all the pitch es behind the plate. The catcher is joined by third baseman Sean Walsh, who hit .337 as a junior and also collected 33 RBIs. Designated hitter Bill Mc Carthy led the majority of the Highlander nine last season with a .337 average, 45 RBIs and four homers. He looks to do even more damage in 2000, his sopho more season. Radford features a duo of southpaw starting pitchers in Bundy Fulmer and Jamie Davis. Fulmer com piled a 5.16 ERA last year, going 7-5 with 39 strikeouts. Although Davis went 0-4 with a 7.82 ERA in 1999, he also struck out 16 batters in 35.2 innings. Besides Bouknight, coach Ray T;ui ncr’s squad is led by junior righthander Peter Bauer. Bauer has compiled a 2 0 record as Tanner’s No', 2 starter, but had a strained muscle sideline him for two weeks. In his two starts, Bauer has a .057 ERA with 14 strikeouts in i 15.2 innings. i With two reliable starters, the i Gamecocks can pick from a solid bullpen corps for the Sunday matchup, i Sophomore Chris Spigncr, who was ex- i pcctcd to take the third spot, has not played yet this season due to iui elbow i injury. Offensively, designated hitter Bo vlobley leads the team with a .455 av ;rage. Although just a freshman, Mob ey has collected 4 RBIs ;uid one homer n five games. Also, centerficldcr Nate Janowicz .405, three HR), Chris Plummer (.361, wo HR) and first baseman Tripp Kcl y (.357, six HR) help the Garnc :ocks with scoring runs. Kelly leads lie team with 17 RBIs. 1 ■*: ~ ~ 11 T-M3'^ - * --i-^.,..3 Jacquelyn Poston Gamecock Sports Third baseman Chris Plummer, 1, high-fives a teammate while Trey Dyson, 17, looks on.
