Nowadays, high school seniors could nap their way through the SATs and still somehow make it into an accredited % college. We are part of the time when getting into a university, Ivy league withheld, is easy, especially compared to the gnashing of teeth our parents went through. This time, the wailing and nail-biting is reserved for graduate, law and medical school. With undergraduate degrees being an all-too common occurrence, Master's | or Do'ctorate's are necessary to be competitive in today's job market. One part of admissions to graduate school seems to be the trickiest, especially to those considering themselves humanities-impaired. Students applying to grad school know the essay is a way to prove ^ necessary language and communication skills. If an applicant cannot clearly express herself in written form, an application's potential for acceptance is diminished. The pressure of needing a K well-written essay has become so great it has allowed a new business to spring up on the Web. The intention is to give applicants a guide as to what kind of writing is accepted by some of the top graduate schools in t.ho nation The reality is students are going to plagiarize. We know that somewhere out there in Cyberspace, some idiot is going to click a mouse, sign an agreement not to plagiarize, and then send in an already accepted essay to another school under her/his name. These people are moronic. If caught plagiarizing, this action could do some serious damage to a student's reputation in the academic world. Forget about trying to apply to another school. If Smith University in preppy New England throws out an application due to plagiarism, rest assured Jones University in California will hear of it and throw out the same applicant. IvyEssays has a good intention, but the reality is their business makes plagiarizing all too easy. Hopefully, the majority of students will act responsibly and use the service correctly. The last thing ai Gamecoc Dnspired by Jimmy Bufifett, I took off to Key West for Spring Break to get out of Columbia for a while and relax in the Caribbean sun. Key West is known for it's laid back, fun loving atmosphere, and I figured that there was no better place to go to forget about school for a while. Key West is a place that any one can go and be themselves. Prejudice is not welcome because everyone is embraced by the town and people are able to put away their differences for a while. For the biggest priority in the Conch Republic is having fun. I came from the northern mainland to forget about classes and assignments that I have not yet started. But when I got to Key West, I was not able to forget about school because it seemed like the University of South Carolina had launched a full-fledged invasion of the Conch Republic. Practically everywhere I looked, I saw USC hats or shirts. Many o! Singleton n I throughout this 21-yeai ^^9 struggle called life, I havt seen and done man] things, not all of them good. It seems as though many people from across the country has jumped on our bandwagon. There were many actual students down there however, and we seemed to share a special fellowship that I have never experienced before. In the Margaritaville Cafe, Hard Rock Cafe, Sloppy Joe's, and down at Mallory Square, I met USC students whom I have never met before. We all felt like bad-asses walking around down there. We owe this to our basketball team of course, who has given us a season of excitement that USC hasn't known in nearly a quarter of a century. I was a Gamecock fan long before I began attending school here. L I never thought that I would see the 1 day when I would feel like a big shot wearing Gamecock clothing. But each die-hard Packer fan had a truly special feeling when their team won it all, the same feeling that all the loyal Gamecock fans have now. One night when I was down there, I took a sunset cruise on a huge catamaran called the Sebago. It was $22.00 for the two-hour cruise and all the beer you could drink. It just so happened that about half the people on board this particular cruise were from Carolina. As the evening drew on, and the beer flowed freely, we began to do the "Game Cocks" cheer. Bystanders who were not fans joined in with us, even the Captain and crew joined in. Pretty soon the whole boat was rocking to the cheers. Everyone had become a Gamecock fen except a Gator fen who responded to our cheers with, "Who gives a ? ?s..t?" His jealousy was drowned out by our reveby. Singletonian philosophy #11: Feminism is a movement that was created so that unattractive women can gain a place in society. Singletonian philosophy #12: The best way to clear a swimming pool is to go to the edge and yell, "Greg Louganis." Singletonian philosophy #13: Speaking of water, this tenet will attempt to explain why my fellow African-Americans have an aversion to it. We actually liked water, until they put us on those damned ships. Singletonian philosophy #14: The definition of conservatism: See Ku KluxKlan. Singletonian philosophy #15: Some of the things that AfricanAmericans will not do: surfing, bungee jumping, flying the Confederate flag, and serving as conservative justices on the Supreme Court. That cruise was one of the neatest things that I have ever experienced. I wished that Lariy, Melvin, BJ and all the rest of the guys could have been there to see this. I was in Daytona Beach on the way home when I heard on the radio about our loss to.Coppin State. It was a bitter ending to this dream season, but the ending should give way to the memory of the fantastic season that we had. After the dismal 5-5 start, our team went on to have one of their greatest seasons ever. The night of Feb. 4 will live forever in the memory of all Gamecock fans as the city of Columbia celebrated the overtime victory over Kentucky. I played in the pep band that helped greet the victorious Gamecocks at the airport after their victory at Kentucky. On the way out, Mr. and Mrs. Wilbourne thanked me for playing and supporting the team. I would like to thank Nate, Larry and the rest of the team for giving all USC fans such a wonderful season and something to cheer about. hilosophy them on their choice in clothing? What the hell are they expecting when they go out dressed like that? Singletonian philosophy #17: Why do men find lesbianism sexy? This seems to be a double standard to me for I think it all sucks, but that's my gender, I guess. Last but not least, there is one more tenet of Singletonian philosophy that I live by just as much as #9, and that is number 25. Money makes the world go around. People will kill, steal, sell their bodies, as well as their souls for it. An unattractive man cannot get a beautiful woman without it. A nnmmnn nprann cannot pet justice in a court of law without it. Marriages break up because of it. "Love" doesn't pay bills; money does. Money is power and power is money. Everyone has a price. Anyone who says they aren't for sale just hasn't been offered enough. These are opinions based on what I have seen and experienced in my short lifetime. I could be wrong but nothing has happened as of yet to prove me wrong. I choose to call it common sense -based reality, with a sick, humorous twist.
