Williams dded six rebounds to her brilliant terformance. However, Georgia's Lady Bulllogs would not die. Although JGA did not shoot well, they breed USC turnovers with their x>sky defense. Georgia also shined it the free-throw line, shooting 65 percent for the game, and 72 per;ent in the second half. The Lady Gamecocks dropped to 7-9 overall and 1-5 in the SEC. Georgia improved to 10-5 and 4-0 in the conference. USC will host Furman on Wednesday, before hosting ninth-ranked Ole Miss on Saturday. Suprisingly the Lady Game:ocks came out on top statistically in most aspects of the game. USC Dutshot Georgia 42 percent to 40 percent and topped them in rebounding 44 to 41. The Lady Gamecocks, led by Williams and Nicki Bass, opened up an 11-point lead with 11:53 left in the second half. Bass nailed 5-of-5 3-point attempts, and finished with 19 points overall. Williams then drew her fourth foul and the Lady Bulldogs responded with a 6-1 run to chop the lead to 45-39. The lead grew again before USC fell apart. Georgia forced the Lady Gamecocks to turn the ball over six times in the final six minutes as UGA took a 57-53 lead with 3:41 left to play. Bass and Williams hit freethrows to tie the game at 57. Williams then added a basket to tie the game at 59 after Georgia's Lady Hardmon scored two of her teamhigh 16 points. Georgia made four free-throws in the final two minutes to take a 63,-59 lead with 10 seconds left. Bass then bombed her fifth 3-pointer to pull the Gamecocks to within one. Georgia killed the final four seconds with a full-court pass as the Lady Gamecocks stood wondering what could have been. Williams expressed her disappointment at the close contest. In the final game, law students David Hoffman and Tom Chase defeated juniors Scott Kay and Clint Smith 16-12 to take the championship. "The competition here was good," Hoffman said, "but I am Kina or aisappomieu mere were not more people in the tournament. I sure didn't expect to win today, but when you only have to play twice to get to the finals it makes it a lot easier." The tournament was open to all USC students, faculty, staff and their spouses. However, only eight teams signed up for the tournament. "1 think these events should be advertised more," Hoffman said, "the more teams that are signed up means better competition for everybody." The tournament was run in a single elimination format. Games went to 16 points with each basket counting one point. They were self-officiated games, and the winner had to win by two. Despite the low turnout, the competition was enjoyable Kay said. "The final game was a good match-up, he said. Center Saturday. The Gamecock men's team, trying to recover from a narrow loss at the hands of the Auburn Tigers, was defeated 129-112 by the 14th ranked team in the nation. Entering the meet, USC was ranked 25th. The Gamecocks were strong in diving competitions. Borman and Gregory then combined to place 1-2 in the three-meter diving event. USC also received a 1-2 finish in the 200-meter breaststroke from Mark Smith and Kevin Smith. First place finishes were also turned in by Drew Ruggieri in the 200-meter backstroke and Jeff Palm in the 400-meter freestyle.
