Friday, October 25, 1991 Pomposity Self-important county solicitor should concentrate on real crimes Richland County Solicitor Dick Harpootlian has done it again. The man who closed down predominately black-owned liquor stores because of public drinking outside of them has decided to tell members of the University of South Carolina how to do things. Governor Campbell asked Attorney General Travis Medlock to look into the recent allegations of former USC President Holderman's sexual misconduct. Medlock passed the buck to Harpootlian, who has vowed to get to the bottom of things. The need for an investigation in the first place is debatable, but Haipootlian's comments are completely uncalled for. Haipootlian said USC trustees who served during Holderman's tenure should resign. He went on to say, "If I was on the board ... I'd feel compelled to resign. Not only did the board give Holderman carte blanche to mismanage the university's fi nances, but they also turned a deaf ear towards any conduct." These comments are out of line. The county solicitor is calling the trustees guilty before he has made any investigation whatsoever. Is this the kind of justice USC can expect from our grandstanding solicitor? Harpootlian is giving the trustees the same chance to defend themselves that he gave the black liquor store owners before he closed them down. To be sure, there is serious reason to wonder about the trustees' role in Holderman's escapades. However, it is both an injustice and an insult to cast aspersions on the entire Board of Trustees, especially when all the facts are not known as of yet. Dick, USC can clean up its own house. The university certainly doesn't need any help from the likes of you.
