Children's p for audience < Theater Review By H. H. CABANISS Staff Writer Sunday afternoon I wandered down to lower Lady Street and into Trustus Theater. I'm glad I did.^Thejr production of Suzan Zeder's Step on a Crack was refreshing, but perhaps incomplete in some ways. This play deals with a daughter overcoming the loss of her mother and coming to terms with her stepmother. The daughter, Ellie, lives in a fantasy world that her stepmother helps her leave. In the process, EJlie learns that her stepmother loves her. Director Erin Thigpen manages to escape almost all of these. She refuses to direct for some nebulous younger audience or to downplay the moments when El lie, the main character, is most immature for the i:_ Lvuviu ui uiv^ auuiL auuitntt. Many theaters would cast both Ellie and the Voice much older than Thigpen did, because the roles are demanding and call for fully developed talents. Although both actresses did a fine job in these roles, their relationship was the sole disappointment of the production. F This was a sin of .omission. There was a great deal of potential in developing this relationship, which simply never materialized. Who is the voice? Does it exercise a physical control or only a psychological one over Ellie? What does it want that causes it to be in conflict with Elbe's desires? What is its weakness? 1-- 1-- - f mcsc <uc uuviuusiy uniy a lew See THEATER page 5 emake h aHLIH w :j|P A group^ of terrified dim-wits gets Night of the Living Dead.
