Zeder's Step on a Crack was refreshing,
but perhaps incomplete in
some ways.
This play deals with a daughter
overcoming the loss of her mother
and coming to terms with her stepmother.
The daughter, Ellie, lives
in a fantasy world that her stepmother
helps her leave. In the process,
EJlie learns that her stepmother
loves her.
Many temptations exist in doing
children's theater, even here where

Many theaters would cast both
Ellie and the Voice much older
than Thigpen did, because the
roles are demanding and call for
fully developed talents. Although
both actresses did a fine job in
these roles, their relationship was
the sole disappointment of the
production.
F This was a sin of .omission.
There was a great deal of potential
in developing this relationship,
which simply never materialized.
Who is the voice? Does it exercise
a physical control or only a psychological
one over Ellie? What
does it want that causes it to be in
conflict with Elbe's desires? What
is its weakness?
