"I think it's pretty awful," Jeff Ottman, a computer science senior at USC, said. "It's a traditional rivalry in all sports and it doesn't seem fair to the fans." Athletic directors from the two schools have _cited scheduling problems as the reason to end a series which has been consecutivelv Dlaved since before 1951. "Fans like to see Clemson play Carolina in all sports," Clemson student Marcy Posey said. "I was shocked," Alan Cannon, sports editor for The Tiger (Clemson's student newspaper) said. "They're probably over reacting. They need to sit down and work it out, concessions should be made by both sides." "I don't think Coach Wilhelm would break a series after its been going on so long, just because he doesn't like to go down there," Cannon said. Scott Willborn, sports director for WUSC, said he feels there is more to it than a scheduling problem. "I'm surprised. It seems that even in the past they've been timid to come here (USC). They usually don't even want to play at night," Willborn said. 1PENT FOOTBALL ET DISTRIBUTION LEMSON Mvnt DOTBfiLL CjfiME { Oct. 30, 1983 t | i * :h Valid I.D. J ! But a deflected save by USC goal keeper Glen Thompson kept the Gamecocks in the lead. With 10 minutes left in the game, Davidson had another chance to tie when Thompson was drawn out of the goal, but the Wildcat's shot was wide to the left. "Glen did an outstanding job in the goal today," USC soccer coach Mark Berson said. "That save off the bar was a big save in today's game. Our goal playing has been consistent this season with the play of Thompson and (Warren) Lipka. I.ipka also did an outstanding job for us in the duke game last Sunday." With the loss, the Wildcat's record drops to 11-3-1. Earlier this season Berson reported this would be a rebuilding year for the Gamecocks. "1 said it would be a rebuilding year for us, but it's still frustrating," he said. "Sometimes we show signs of brilliance, but then we turned around with signs of inconsistancy. "On top of that, injuries have really hurt us this season. That's also frustrating, because it's hurting the development of the younger players. We've had four of our starters injured this season, so our younger players have had to play different positions each week to fill in the holes." Although Carolina picked up the shutout Wednesday, Berson was not impressed with the victory. "Davidson is a fine team, and they're having a good year," he said. "They're disciplined, and because of that we were not able to create much, and that's a major source of concern. We'll have to improve before this Sunday against Wake rui cm . Wake Forest lost to Clemson 1-0 in double overtime Oct. 20. "I think we played pretty poorly, despite the win"senior forward Mike Menhart said. "We tried some good things out there, but we were slow. We weren't thinking or reacting like we should have been. In the past if we had played this poorly we wouldn't have won." As for Sunday, Meuhait 'did, "The competition is going to be a lot tougher. Wake Forest is a really good team, but 1 think we can take them." er cancellation "They each blame each other," Willborn said. "There's talk that Bobby Foster, USC's assistant athletic director and their A.D. (assistant director) were talking. Both teams are at fault. I don't see them playing in the regular season this year, u s 100 laie now ana iney ana c.iemson) can t back down." WUSC's assistant sports director, Jimmy Higginbotham, agreed with Willborn. "I think there's more to it," Higginbotham said. "Clemson is not the only team that won't play here. UNC won't come down here, there's a lot said against the third base hecklers. I feel that if these are potential pro players, they should be able to handle the pressure."
