USC goalie i By Haywood Taylor In soccer, the goalie spends much of his time standing idle, but the way a goalkeeper reacts in those few seconds of action he sees may determine the outcome of a game. Glen Thomoson. eoalkeeDer for USC's soccer team, has been making the right reactions. The junior from Irmo has 59 saves and a 1.20 goals-against average for the Gamecocks this season. Thompson said he started playing soccer as a way of occupying his time between other sports. "I PLAYED football and baseball and I took up soccer as something to do in between seasons," Thompson said. "1 didn't get serious about soccer until my eleventh grade year in nign scnooi. Oddly enough, the year Thompson began to look at soccer seriously he was not playing in his present position. "We had two goalies on my team (Irmo high school) and I was changed to fullback because of my ability to play the field," he said. Thompson was switched back to goalkeeper at the beginning of his senior season at Irmo when he decided to attend use. "The facilities at USC were great als<p." USC head soccer coach Mark Berson said he thinks Tiaving an individual such as Thompson in the goal is a definite asset for his team. "The goalkeeper position continues to be a brieht snot for us." Berson said. "Thomo o ?i ? ? son and Warren Lipka have played well and have given leadership to the team." Thompson has alternated with Lipka in the goal this season, and Thompson said he doesn't mind sharing the position. "WHEN I first came to USC I just wanted to get some playing time," Thompson said. "Right now I've been alternating with Warren but I'm still getting some playing time so I don't mind." Despite the fact Thompson has played well thus far, Berson said he does believe Thomp diui can iiiipiuvc. "At this level, decision making is important," Berson said. "Both Glen and Warren rom page 16 the second half after trailing LSU by only four points at intermission. "I'M DISAPPOINTED in our play on the offensive side," Morrison said. "We just didn't seem to make the plays when we had the opportunity to put some points on the board." "I'm disappointed because one of our goals this year was to make improvements each week and for the first time 1 really feel we didn't do that," Morrison said. "We want to play, but what they wanted was unacceptable to us. "We just thought too much of our fans and program to dilute the rivalry by playing a lesser number of games at times when not as many could come and see us play." Raines said dropping the series hurts everyone associated with the two programs. "I want to play. Our players aren't pleased, nor am I as a coach," Raines said. "The biggest losers are the fans and players and the two universities. I don't understand why we don't play them in all sports. "WE ARE in a small state with one of the biggest college rivalries in the country, but I don't agree with playing a weekday game, and I don't think our fans would either." Wilhelm has said over the past two years he didn't like playing at Sarge Frye Field. 5 "I dread going down there," Wilhelm said April 26. "The place is just a circus. The fans are vicious. They get right behind our dugout and harass the hell our of our players, and tnat innmiaaies ana scares mem. u s a very poor situation." Marcum said it is difficult to play at USC because it is difficult to win at Sarge Frye Field. "IF YOU look at the arenas that are supposed to be difficult to play in, you will find they are difficult to win in," he said. "Sure, it's difficult to play here because we're used to winning and it's difficult to win here. But to blame it on our fans I think is unfair." The Tigers lead the series 55-32 since 1951. Clemson beat the Gamecocks 8-1 April 30 at : USC, its first victory at Sarge Frye Field 1 since 1979. Marcum, Raines and Foster said they hope the series resumes in 1985.
