USC-Clemson 198' 'Wilhelm t ws ma h h ***& m m h e ? By Johnny Boggs The "main reason" behind the dropping of 1984's USC-Clemson University baseball series is because Tiger coach Bill Wilhelm just "doesn't want to play," Carolina athletic director Bob Marcum said yesterday. Clemson officials announced the move to drop the series between the two schools for the upcoming season Wednesday, and both schools have placed the blame on each other. "It looks like they are trying to figure out ways not to play us," Marcum told the ^5KKaS?lll3BBI^^B^Bl-5fflMSHaHk m Mb^&i^V ^^HB^R|g|^J|i ; ' ' pM-^f t;??^ ?I ~~ ? l||OI piDfdl l/UIIIIOI>IO.i. Marcum, however, said he thought Clemson was asking for too much. "CERTAINLY, CLEMSON has the right with scheduling whatever time they want to at their place, but to tell us we have to play in the afternoon during the week doesn't seem right," Marcum said. About promoting in-state collegiate baseball, he said, "Between 60 to 65 games scheduled, I don't think it is too much to ask to play two games between the two schools in order to help baseball. "We made two trips up there last year, and there aren't many schools willing to do that, and there aren't many with the money to do that." Clemson sent a contract to USC in August, but Carolina officials never agreed to the conditions. RAINES SAID, "Bill called and said '1 don't want to play, but our people want to play so we've got six dates open, but I'm not going to play on the weekend."' "I selected two dates and told him 1 didn't think our officials would ever accept it." Clemson athletic director Bill McLellan said Wednesday, "Coach Raines and coach Wilhelm had already agreed on the schedule. Then, completely by surprise, a couple of weeks ago Bob Marcum called and told us if we didn't agree to play a four-game homeand-home series in 1984, they would cancel the two games we had already scheduled. "It was pretty much an all or _not-hii1g proposition." MCLELLAN DECLINED further comment yesterday. Wilhelm and Robinson also refused comment. Marcum said the series wasn't cancelled because the contract was never signed. "We had been looking into it since May and all along thought it was unacceptable to us," he said.
