Human rights advoca U.S. hurts by aiding E By Neal R. Whho III Staff Writer American financial aid to El Salvador is hindering efforts to establish democracy in that country, two members of the El Salvador Human Rights Commission told a crowd of more than 500 Wednesday at St. Joseph's Church Sister Margarita Navarro and Ivan Escobar of the El Salvador Human Rights Commission spoke out against the "suppression" of their people in the presentation El Salvador: the Next Vietnam?" They compared America s increasing financial and technical aid to El Salvador with American aid to Vietnam during the 1950s and 60s. Photographs of mutilated bodies lined the walls of the auditorium where the audience heard stories about killings by the El Salvadoran government. Since 1977. 27 priests have been expelled from El Salvador and seven have been killed. Navarro said. All had been labeled cor munists. Marxists and Lennonists because they advocated human rights, she said. El Salvador is controlled bv a five-man civilian government, but the military controls the country, Navarro said. Although 2 percent of the people hold 57 percent of the land, the government claims to lead a democratic country, she said. "WE HAVE a democratic country," said Escobar, "If you call the slaughter of protesters who oppose the suppression of the people democratic." Although many governments, most religious organizations and the United Nations have strongly denounced the El Salvadoran government, the United States has supported El Salvador with millions of dollars and has allocated $5.5 million for the country in the 1981 budget, according to 'We had never even seen arms until you (the United States) came.' ? Sister Margarita Navarro Escobar. WE HAD never even seen arms until you (the United States)came," Navarro said. The people are fignting back against the military because they refuse to pass on to their children the terror in which they live, she said. They will fight to the death, and unfortunately many do, Navarro said. "We urge you all to please write your congressmen and make them nut an pnH fn American aid in El Salvador," Navarro said.4'Let the people of El Salvador be free to select the government of their own choice," she said.
