The Pollock-type linear elements contrast wonderfully with the large stain-washed areas, all of which suggest illusionistic and energized landscape forms. Although the work is visually stimulating, it suggests a kind of naive restraint, and leaves one wondering about possible avenues for a more advanced development. Free-lance photographer David Lackey has stepped out of his photo-suedes to create an en vironmeniai/auaiDie creation called, "There's Just Something About That Name." This is one of Lackey's "seven personalities," and it appears we just missed the Rev. J.C., but left in his stead are all the cliches: "Jesus" in neon, an abandoned crutch, wig, and, of course, pledge cards. i The handmade paper works of Nancy Albertson provide an interesting integration of design and surface, with her presentation (especially in "Systems Exchange 1 /A A * " * * ami uveriones ennancing tne overall effect. Other artists showing include the ceramic/sculptural reliefs of Geff Reed; prints by Gloria Clemmensen; color drawings by Judy Pitts Stevens; and the beautifully subtle color field paintings of Eleanor Byrne. The Guild's Award Show is but another example of the truly professional level of our own regional art. The show will continue through Feb. 17. Silversprinq in Spur Considered by many to be one of the hottest tourning outfits around, Silverspring is coming to the Spur tonight and tomorrow night at 9. This Wachinafnn H P hacprl hanH barely two years old, is already an established musical force. This is due in large part to their classy blend of American music forms: rock, swing, r&b, jump blues and boogie woogie. Silverspring became a reality in late 1977. "We left bigger things for Art," says Haabe with a grin. "By that I mean we could've taken a lot of jobs for more money, but they were boring gigs. We did over 300 dates in 1978 alone, including 28 in one month, and believe me, it's been anything but boring." Flanked by Nat Winer's manic violin on the right and John FritzSpiro's energetic guiart on the left, Silverspring's act is five good musicians having a great time. Perhaps the primary strength of this band is that their original tunes, penned by bassist Sal DeRaffele with contributions from all, get as big an audience response as their more immediately recognizable tunes. Silverspring mixes it up, and the results are pleasing. They elicit a strong audience response, and their marathon sets offer a fine, broad-based collection of terrific American music. Imagine, if you will, a dance-flavored "Summer in the City" with a hot fiddle break, and you're on your way to understanding Silverspring's music. ?
