Industry r (AP)jThe Kecording Industxy Association of America changed its rules for the certifying of recordings as gold and platinum during 1979. A gold album, for instance, is one which has sold 500,000 copies. Previously, some albums "shipped gold." meaninc that 500.000 conips were sent to stores. That record could be certified as gold before any member of the public had bought one. Then, sometimes, the stores didn't sell all they had and returned some to record companies. To prevent the certifying of a record which didn't really sell enough copies to justify it, the RIAA decided that on records released after last July 1, records could not be certified until three months or more had elapsed. By then, sales and return figures should be available. So, it's difficult to compare the number of records certified in 1979 with the number certified in 1978. However, the first six months of the two years can be compared, and in that time span 1979 was down from 1978. The second half of 1979 had fewer certifications than the first half of the year, with no records released nftf?r Spnt 1 plicihlp for rpr tification during the year. Platinum singles are certified on the sale of two million or more copies. In the last six months of 1979, four were certified: 44Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now," McFadden and Whitehead; "Hot Stuff" and "Bad Girls," Donna Summer; and "Knock on Wood," Amii Stewart. Platinum albums and-or their counterparts on prerecorded tapes are certified after selling one million copies. Sixteen albums turned platinum during the last six months of 1979: Candy-0, The Cars; Risque, Chic; Million Mile Re-flection, Charlie Daniels Band; Nether Lands, Dan Fogleberg; Disco Nights, GQ; Richie Lee Jones, Rickie Lee Jones; Greatest Hits, JVaylon Jennings; Evolution, Journey; Off the Wall, Michael Jackson; Dynasty, Kiss; Get the Knack, The Knack; First Under the Wire, Little River Band; Teddy, Teddy Fendergrass; The Kids Arc Alright soundtrack, The Who. _ The RIAA certified 22 singles gold, meaning they had sold one million copies. They are: "Rise," Herb Alpert; "I Want You To Want Me," Cheap Trick; "The Devil Went Down To Georgia," Charlie Daniels Band; "After the Love Has Gone," Earth Wind and Fire; "Don't Bring Me Down," Electric Light Orchestra; "When You're In Love with a Beautiful Woman," Dr. Hook; "Born To Be Alive," Patrick Hernandez; "You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else," The Jones Girls; 4 IP 1 FT* ? ? ? 1 A * - t oau r^ycs, nouen jonn; uon i Stop Till You Get Enough," Michael Jackson; "Mama Can't Buy You Love," Elton John; "My Sharona," The Knack; "I Was Made for Lovin' You," Kiss, "Ladies Night," Kool and the Gang; "Makin' It," David Naughton; "l^ftad Me On," Maxine Nightingale; *4She Believes In Me," Kenny Rogers; "You Take My Breath Away," Rex Smith; "Mfein Event," Barbra Streisand; A All the Lights," Donn Summer; "Just When I Needed You Most," Randy Vanwarmer; "I*1 Never Love This Way Again," Dionne Warwick.
