Ray Flynn of East Tennessee State, who finished third in the 5,000, set a new mark in the 800 as he raced to a four second victory over Tim Jance of East Carolina. Flynn's time of 1:50.8 broke his own record by 2.7 seconds. Herman Mclntyre of East Carolina was another performer whose record breaking mark was an update of a standard he set the previous year. In 1977.
