Since USCs departure from the

THE LAST EVENT of the day was also productive
for Alabama. The Crimson Tide mile relay team, this
year's NCAA indoor champions, set a new record of
3:08.4. The third leg of the relay, run by Darroll
Gatscn, was the strongest.
Gatson passed the runners from North Carolina
State and Adelphi (N.Y.) who had led the r?np fnr
first two legs. Both Adelphi and State topped the old
mark of 3:11.33 set last year by Auburn.
Ralph King of North Carolina turned in one of the
most impressive performances of the day as he
recorded a time of 14:07.02 in the 5,000 meter run. It
broke the old mark, set by King in 1977, by almost
three seconds.
Ray Flynn of East Tennessee State, who finished
third in the 5,000, set a new mark in the 800 as he
raced to a four second victory over Tim Jance of East
Carolina. Flynn's time of 1:50.8 broke his own record
by 2.7 seconds.
Herman Mclntyre of East Carolina was another
performer whose record breaking mark was an
update of a standard he set the previous year. In 1977.
Mclntyre recorded a mark of 53-1, beating Larry
, Lowe of Georgia Tech, who jumped 51-7.

June Griffith of Adelphi. Griffith set a record in the
long jump of 19-4, breaking the old mark by more
than two feet. Griffith also ran the 400 meters in 24.16,
beating her nearest competitor by 1.27 seconds,
establishing a meet record.
Griffith also ran legs on the 400 and mile relay
icams. Aaeipni's winning times of 47.67 and 3:51.11
respectively, were both meet records.
ALABAMA'S WOMEN set two meet records, as
Lynn Gilmore tossed the shot 40-V4 and Mary Rush
hurled the discus 128-5Vi>. North Carolina's Michelle
Langan set a record in the high jump with a 5-9.
"It was really super today," said Strong. "There is
a lot of interest in the track program here, including
Coach Carlen. He is very interested in us building a
winning track program. We are young now and have
our best years ahead of us.
"Also, this meet is going to grow, it is going to get
bigger. We plan to keep the team scoring out of it to
keep the quality high. This way, coaches won't be
holding people back from certain events," said
Strong.
