TheGai Enterta Union bud By BAKRY GLENN Gamecock Staff Writer While the additions to the Russell House are evident, many students do not realize that the University union also has a new addition Director Thomas C. Otts. Otts replaced Bob Todd, who resigned June 30 to become union director at the University of Illinois at Champagne. Otts became USC union director Aug. 23. Otts came here after being director of Student Life at Eastern Michigan University. He is a graduate of Eastern Michigan and was director of Student Life for six years. Otts views his new job as awesome and challenging work. The new Russell House Addition is a great step forward but will require new innovations, requiring more planning and evaluation. Funds are a major problem. This year's allocation for the Union is $148,673 compared with last year's $168,274 budget. All nine committees' budgets have been cut from the amount requested by them. The organizations affected the most are Cinematic Arts, Contemporary Sounds and Cultural Series. BI Sxi^* w j 'I feel student have on sure th be thos accept/ oblems for I SENSE THE budget becoming tighter and tighter. It has been cut severely. For example, last year our allocation for necessities and supplies for the Russell House was approximately $4,000. "This year our building has doubled in size but only about $1,000 has been added to this particular area. We must give more serious thought twoard monitoring our appropriations because we don't have the surpluses, which we had in the past." Ott's primary concern is in forming students of the union's services and activities. "We need to tell people about the services offered at the Russell House. I don't think students are aware of all the services we have, LlHM. *& ! ft mi i Mill v. very confident of the leadership that we i our committees. Our services are more than adequate to the student. Improved communication is also the answer to solving student apathy, he said. "THERE WILL ALWAYS BE APPAT11Y but if you meet the needs of the student, then he will participate. The extent to which the union meets the students' needs is the extent to which they will participate." "My job will be primarily a complementary one.
