THE CONCEPT OF an alternate cinema in Columbia is not a new one. The Five Points Theater, now the home of Floyd Mathews Clothing Store and The Stage Door, was Columbia's first attempt at providing movie audiences with a choice between the usual films and the more obscure but critically acclaimed pictures that routinely would be overlooked. Un tortunately, the Five Points theatre closed during the mid 1960's. A second but much more restricted attempt to begin an alternate film series in the city was begun by Irvin-Fuller in the spring of 1972 with the Columbia Fine Film Committee. Because of poor organization and promotion, however, the series was discontinued after only four festivals in 1974. This past March, the belief that an alternate cinema could survive in Columbia was revived by the Irvin-FullerCompany. ll% I l IA1XY, l ilt, ALTKKINATE cinema was tobe maintained for 32 weeks during the year, with two 16 week series. Thus, the 10 week, Classic Cinema Series is being tried. Dugas said that these films were chosen because they were available and because each film represented certain categories that balanced the program.
