Running back Jay Lynn Hodgin scored both touchdowns on ten and five-yard runs. In the first quarter LSU's defense had difficulty stopping the USC veer, and particularly Grantz. Grantz ran the option to near perfection, keeping the ball for gains if LSU played the pitch man and pitching to Hodgin if LSU came-up to stop the quarterback. Nonetheless, USC stayed in the game and almost won it because their offense was able to move the ball against the Tiger's defense, which was ranked ninth in the nation before the game.
