Miley'sP StoppeT( BY STEVF PARKER SportsEditor Victory for the Gamecocks seemed somewhat assured when Louisiana State quarterback Mike Miley appeared trapped by a fierce Carolina pass rush late in the fourth quarter. But victory slipped away when Miley eluded the rush and fired a 48-yard bomb to set up LSU's final and winning touch down. With USC leading 29-26 and under three minutes to play, Miley dropped back to pass when con fronted with a second down and eight situation at his own 39-yard line. Optimism flowed through Williams-Brice Stadium as the crowd of 51,039 saw the Gamecocks break through the Tiger offensive line and surround Miley. But Miley shook loose, sprinted to his right and spotted wide receiver Ben Jones open on the right sideline and fired a pass to him which Jones carried to the Carolina 13 before being knocked out-of-bounds by defen sive back C.A. Wilson. Five plays later Miley carried the ball in from two yards to put LSU up 33-26. "It was a broken play," USC middleguard Dana Carpenter said, "Andy Leventis and I had the quarterback pinned in pretty good but we let himget away." Leventis actually touched Miley, but the Tiger quarterback eluded his grasp and slipped the possible tackle. Miley confirmed the fact that it was a broken play. "The primary play was to the tailback coming out of the backfield, but South Carolina messed us up at the line by switching to the zone," Miley said. "I just ran around till I noticed someone open." Miley threw about a 30 yard pass to Jones and the receiver carried it the remainder of the distance. The 48-yard play was Jones' only reception of the night. "After 37 (Jones) caught the ball we missed a couple tackles on him," defensive coach Jerry Stovall said. "I think if we would have made the tackle where he caught it we still would have been in good shape." PONDER1 TUESD 5 P.M .T IL C . STUDENT SIRLOIN STE AK -Choice Sirloin served wit! Hot Bread. It was a broken play and the receivers all broke their patterns. "It's very difficult for the backs to cover the receivers when they can run anywhere they want to, beca use the defender doesn't know where the receiver is going. If we had been in a man-to-man coverage it would have been easier for the backs because they would have a receiver all over the field. "But in a zone," Stovall said, "the receivers were running from zone to zone with no rhyme or reason." For Carolina Coach Paul Dietzel that one broken play was sad. "That play was the most heartbreaking play of my life,"Dietzel said. "What can you say about one of those crazy plays?
