Fans R4 BY MARSHALL SWANSON Contributing Editor It looks as if Sept. 2? is shaping up as one of those days in Gamecock football tI'.t most partisans would just as soon forget. Then, as if that wasn't enough, the USC Marching Band added insult to injury by ignoring the student, faculty and staff side of the stands during its half-time extravaganza, playing only to the alumni side of the stadium. The result was grumbling aplenty as fans filed out of stadium turnstiles at the end of the evening. Irvin Woods, chairman of the powerful athletic committee of the Student Senate-the body that controls student tickets to athletic events and complaints related to the tickets--got enough flak about the incident from friends to warrant doing something about it. The memo expressed the committee's dissatisfaction that none of the half-time show was presented to the old side of the stadium, and threatened retaliation if the band didn't give immediate assurance to the I committee that the incident wouldn't happen again. The memo reminded the band in no uncertain terms-that unless future half-time shows were presented to both sides of the stands in equal portions, action would be taken to remove the band's seats from their present location to some other portion of the stadium-presumably the end zone. Although the memo was dated Oct. 4, Band Director Thomas R. O'Neal said Tuesday he knew nothing about it until he was shown a photostatted copy of the document by the Gamecock. Later, Woods said the memo was delayed due to sluggish mailing procedures at SGA. "But the alumni have a right to see the shows too," he said. O'Neal said filming the show for week-day critique sessions was don't have this i the same side of the me-team boosters." another problem and pointed to the difficulties of trying to get the entire performance on film when half of the show is presented to one side of the stands and half to the other side. O'Neal was hesitant to speculate on the effect of the committee's threat to move the band's seats if the incident were to happen again. "These band members pay their student activities fees too," he said. "They practice hard to play the performances and I think they're entitled to good seats." In the meantime the question of the athletic committee's authority to move seats anywhere was left unanswered. "I've been on the athletic committee for four years and it has acted with control. over student seating all that time," he said. He added that he thought an agreement had been made with the band some years ago as to where the band would sit during performances. The committee, added Woods, was instrumental in giving a combination spirit committee card section the heave-ho last year after it had been granted favorable seating but didn't live up to preseason promises. Whether or not O'Neal would take sitting-down an athletic committee move to tamper with band seating arrangements wasn't clear either. Ralph Floyd, assistant athletic director, said he didn't think a squabble over the incident was likely, however. "Anything can be talked out without a disturbance," he saii, adding that the athletic depart ment would act as arbitrator in any discussions between the band and the athletic committee. .UB PRESENTS THE RAPIDS t. 14 e Broad River Rapids se at l e30'p.m. 25 percent o ND FALL SLACKS GLADRAGS st( At Five Points) 's O nly ilderness (;o on S TENTS FOOTGEAR SLEEPING BAGS PACKS & FRAMES FREEZE DRY FOOD USGS MAPS RAIN GEAR CLIMBING ROPE DOWN CLOTHES Fri. nd 10A.M. 6P.M.
