Veteran's Club President Carl McIntosh stated that the club is instituting new programs which will provide useful services to help veterans cope with the adjustment of returning to school. ' McIntosh said that returning veterans have a "unique" problem in that they are usually classified as re-admitted students or as transfers and no effective orientation program has been instituted for them. A type of "big brother" program is being structured to help solve this problem. McIntosh explained that under this program club members already here will be helping veterans just returning to campus with such problems as housing, familiarizing him with the campus and working with him in dealing with any problem that may occur. USC, Benedict Must Wait Foi - October checks for as many as 145 veterans at USC and 112 veterans at Benedict College will be delayed because confirmation of their enrollment had not been received at the Veterans Ad ministration in time for the payment to be processed. The students involved are among those who received ad vance GI Bill payments for enrollment beginning August 1973. Normally, the next check would arrive in early October. Veterans Administration of ficials in the Columbia Regional Office explained that an in dividual's October check can't be mailed until his school con firms his enrollment. 4 A 3. eterans Clu )ervices For McIntosh said that he feels the veterans already here can help themselves tremendously just by meeting and discussing: their situation. "We are all ex periencing the same types of difficulties and I really feel that we can help each other out," Mc: Intosh said. One of the first projects the Carolina Veteran's Club is doing is trying to arrange for tickets to the Appalachian State football game for disabled veterans at the Veteran's Hospital here in Columbia. McIntosh said that financial arrangements are being worked out with the university to enable the Veteran's Club to do this. He added that a program is being worked out with the band to provide some kind of halftime show honoring veterans, since Veteran's Day is November 11 the day after the Appalachian State game. Plans for the future include becoming a member of the National Association of Collegiate Veterans (NACV) obtaining a working budget from student Students r VA Checks If confirmation cards were not received by September 28, Oc tober checks were held up. Later checks are mailed as soon as the necessary information is received, VA said. Anyone who has not received his check by October 5 should make sure that he is properly registered in school and that the school has forwarded the necessary con firmation card to the VA. Inquiries to the VA before October 15 could delay checks still further. VA advised also, if you received an advance on your education benefits and later decided to drop out you should immediately return advance payment to your VA office. Work is also being done to possibly reinstate a deferred payment plan to enable veterans to pay their tuition on-a partial basis rather than all at once. The most immediate goal of the club is to increase its mem bership. McIntosh emphasized that the club is not restricted to veterans alone and encourages participation from anyone who is interested. He added that dependents of militarty personnel would benefit tremendously by becoming a part of the club. The Carolina Veteran's Club is a chartered campus organization and is affiliated with the VFC, and the Veterans Affairs Office located in the Pendleton Street ad ministration building. Anyone interested in working with the club should contact Bud Thurber in the Veterans Affairs Office or call Carl McIntosh at 787 7008. Old Degree Aplications Are Worthless University students that have filled out degree applications for December graduation may as well rip them up. They're worthless. According to T. Luther Gunter of the Educational Services Office, improvements are being made on the forms which, will make the old ones obsolete. Gunter said the new forms which should be available by next week, will include new school codes, as well as a section where prospective graduates will list needed courses for graduation after consultation with their academic dean. Deadline for degree ap plication for December graduation is Dec. 17. PM he A Millionaire? ~to ina Theatre) id
