Well, asking the president to Prite something of this nature s not wholly unlike putting a uickel into a juke box: you've ieard that song before, but )ecause the box was there, long with the nickel, the com )ulsion was too great for your nasochistic urge. All we can say is that we isked for it. If one detects a uphemism in this sentence, it s not in the president's >hraseseology that there are ndeed visible signs of growth, out in his veiled assertion that his construction is visible on almost every block." InC- : Washington St.0 Phone-252-7933 8/QQQQ pening after the first good rainfall, president Jones could well add "Frontier Pioneering" to his list of innovative courses as thousands of students will be trucking through some of that good South Carolina clay being meticulously spread all over campus by columns of con struction crews. We would need 3.4 million Sir Walter Raleigh's to cast as many capes across Pickens and Sumter streets to protect the dainty feet of our co-eds.. It also seems ironic that the university told the student body last spring that Green Street couldn't be closed this fall for a trial run of the mall experi ment because of work on Pic kens which they said wouldn't be finished until February. The primary reason for the stall was that two main campus arteries couldn't be closed simultane ously because of the ensuing traffic problems. Though the president does keep himself relatively ' sec luded in his office at the administration building, any one can see that there are plenty of windows in the presidental home. If Jones were to glance at his campus from one of those panes he would see he has done exactly what he said couldn't be done. Shot We understand that Vice President Brunton (business affairs) is crying because the weather this summer has held up the construction. However, no one is going to convince us that, in the planning for the alte ration of Pickens and Sumter streets, the point was never raised that such a setback could arise and be planned for. Ultimately we must apologize to President Jones for asking him to write a welcome address to the student body and then declining to print it. But seri Dusly can we be party to a pres idential "dodge" which skirts the problems that ernestly con .ern students during their daily treks across this campus? It is much more likely that massive traffic jams, high food prices accompanied by long waits to pay those prices, mud lied streets and sidewalks, lack Af parking spaces and a general :haotic academic atmosphere provide the need for all the :ounseling programs here on which the president loves to 1well.
