The Student Senate as it is now
Is no power with the administra
mn. I have become convinced, after
udying the situation, that the only
able answer is University Gover- I
ince, specifically a University
mate. If we could join with the ]
culty and the administrators in a
impuswide Senate, then perhaps
is university could be run for the
,nefit of those who put the most
to it. -
For these reasons, I respectfully I
id regretfully submit my resigna
mn from the Student Senate.

Senator I
To the Editor: Cc

In my year serving as student
senator from the Towers, I have hi
become more and more frustrated ti
by the impotence which strangles st
almost any effective legislation that vi
the Senate is able to enact. ni
Although the Senate has moved Si
ahead in the area of lighting by fe
sponsoring lights in the University ci
Terrace area, it has been sorely th
remiss in other places, like the bI
Towers, where the lighting is in
deplorable.
Although the Senate performed a ar
very real service'to the students by ti(
sponsoring the now-flourishing

Well, asking the president to

s not wholly unlike putting a

long with the nickel, the com

All we can say is that we

Isn't that exciting.
There's more though. With a

he president says "A more visi

after the first good rainfall,
president Jones could well add
"Frontier Pioneering" to his list
of innovative courses as
thousands of students will be
trucking through some of that
good South Carolina clay being
meticulously spread all over
campus by columns of con
struction crews.
We would need 3.4 million Sir
Walter Raleigh's to cast as
many capes across Pickens and
Sumter streets to protect the
dainty feet of our co-eds..
It also seems ironic that the
university told the student body
last spring that Green Street
couldn't be closed this fall for
a trial run of the mall experi
ment because of work on Pic
kens which they said wouldn't
be finished until February. The
primary reason for the stall was
that two main campus arteries
couldn't be closed simultane
ously because of the ensuing
traffic problems.
Though the president does
keep himself relatively ' sec
luded in his office at the
administration building, any
one can see that there are plenty
of windows in the presidental
home. If Jones were to glance
at his campus from one of those
panes he would see he has done
exactly what he said couldn't be
done.

We understand that Vice
President Brunton (business
affairs) is crying because the
weather this summer has held
up the construction. However,
no one is going to convince us
that, in the planning for the alte
ration of Pickens and Sumter
streets, the point was never
raised that such a setback could
arise and be planned for.
Ultimately we must apologize
to President Jones for asking
him to write a welcome address
to the student body and then
declining to print it. But seri
Dusly can we be party to a pres
idential "dodge" which skirts
the problems that ernestly con
.ern students during their daily
treks across this campus?
It is much more likely that
massive traffic jams, high food
prices accompanied by long
waits to pay those prices, mud
lied streets and sidewalks, lack
Af parking spaces and a general
:haotic academic atmosphere
provide the need for all the
:ounseling programs here on
which the president loves to
1well.
Let's hope that something
gives on this campus before the
?resident announces the open
ng of side walk psychiatry
;tands to further calm the col
ective student nerve.
