"The big differ between Tuesday night onight was motivation,!' dcClure. "We had a disap Meet pointing performance Tuesday night and the kids knew they were better than they showed Tuesday." The Gamecocks got 10 points out of their relay teams, which had been shut out by Baptist. They won the meet officially with the mile relay, the last running event. Jim Small, Bob Dempsey, Paul McLeod and Mike Sheley romped to a 25 yard win with a 3:16.4 clocking. McClure conceded that the Gamecocks got points was not counting on. "Look at the inter mediate hurdles," he said. "There's no way that our kids were capable of getting the places they got." Billy Novo, who finished sec ond in the high hurdles, won the intermediates in 53.5 and team mate Joe McCulloch was third in 53.7. McCulloch led most of the way but Novo came from about five yards behind over the last hurdle to win the race. Milton Reid, Paul McLeod and Mike Sheley also took the 220 in 22.0 and was also second in the 100 with a 9.7 time. McLeod won the 440 in 48.8, well ahead of USC's Dan Loshack who was second in 49.4. Carolina's half-milers, Sheley and Dempsey, came through with nine points. Sheley won the race in 1:52.4 and Dempsey was third in 1:52.7. Sheley had to come from behind to win the race. After leading the pack for the first lap Sheley fell behind FSU'S Tyrone Frederick until heoutkicked him coming off the last turn. Frederick, a close sec ond was credited with the same time as Sheley. USC's first places in the field events came from Bruce Stuart, who went 47-1% in the triple jump, and Buck Thompson, who threw the discus 167-8. Ron Adams and Pat Flemm ing also gave McClure a sur prise by tying for second in the high jump. "I was surprised with the points we got in the high jump," McClure said, "because there were three 6-10 jumpers in the competition." McClure hopes that his team will consistently have perfor mances like the one Saturday night. "I think the kids are beginning to realize that they have a good team," he said. "I don't. think we've reached our full potential by any means. We have a lot of room to grow." Carolina will end their three. meet home schedule Tuesday when they meet Clemson at 4:30.
