BY LAWRENP MeSPEARS -to the Naonal Oblerivr College graduates are finding job prospects the best they've been in the past four years, but employment horizons may never again be as wide as they were in the 1960s. In coming years, in fact, more persons with college degrees may have to settle for jobs usually filled by blue collar workers. These findings, based on govern ment statistics, research papers, college placement reports, labor market analyses and census figures, were released by the Car negie Commission on Higher Edu cation last week in a 246-page docu ment that raises questions about Tuture national education policy. Right now, said commission Chairman Clark Kerr at a New York press conference, there's good news. Demand has increased for college-trained talents. The job market looks good for healthcare personnel, accountants, managers (those with experience and masters degrees fare best), computer and office machine operators, recreation workers and lawyers with certain specialities, Kerr said. But the good news was followed by warnings, Law school enroll ments are swelling, and the future demand-supply ratio is hard to pre dict. Also another talent glut is likely to follow the present rebound in the demand for engineers. Access to employment is improv ing for women and all minority members. "College educated black women appear to be in a par ticularly favorable position," says the report. "The adaptability and realistic expecta tions of American students dimin ish the'prospects of grave political repercussions as in Germany at the time of Hitler." The report suggests that in the future a much larger portion of the work force will have professional and academic credentials. With democratic, ability-oriented hiring standards, this cooid bring about a meritocracy in employment, and with it an equalization of wages and salaries.
