Gamec BY STEVE PARKER Sports Editor Carolina's baseball team showed strong indications that it may emerge from the slump which has plagued it for more than half the season by winning two of its last three outings. But as if USC was hesitant to say farewell to the slump for good, the Gamecocks displayed some hor rendous fielding in their game with Georgia Southern on Saturday and managed to boot it away in the final inning, 3-2. The loss, however, only gave the Eagles , ranked fifth in the nation, a split with Carolina as USC claimed a victory on Friday night, 4-2. "We've looked real good in our last three or four games until our defense broke down in the last inn ing today," said Coach Bobby Richardson following the loss. "But in baseball you expect things like that to happen. We've won some games that way this year, also. "The way we've played lately is how I intended our team to play all tIfis season." Tar Heels C USC; NC St USC's tennis team swdpt past NC State Saturday afternoon to remove some of the embarrasment pro vided by a crushing loss to North Carolina Friday, 9-0. Powerful North Carolina easily dominated the Gamecocks, taking everything but one set. Carolina's lone taste of victory came when Jeff Kefalos fought past lar Heel For rest Simmons, 64 in the opening set. But Kefalos returned to the USC trend on the day by surrendering a tie-breaker to his opponent, and dropping the number four singles spot. Everything else was clearly UNC's, as the Tar Heels refused to relinquish even another set victory to Carolina's team. But USC rebounded handily on Saturday by stifling the Wolfpack STI U Pizz SPAGI Serving We Located a Dcks' Br Carolina dominated both games Nith the highly touted Eagles behind the strong pitching of star ,ers Alan Hilliard and Allen Johnson, along with the sparkling relief work of Bo Robinson and Greg Ward. On Saturday, USC and Georgia Southern engaged in a pitching duel between Johnson and Eagle Eddie Venet, but the Gamecocks were able to establish dominance and owned a 2-1 lead going into the final inning despite having only three hits. The ninth was Carolina's undoing, however, as USC's infield commit teed three errors and allowed Geor gia Southern to score twice and take a 3-2 lead into the bottom frame. Eagle Steve Pietsch singled to start the rally and attempted to get into scoring position with a theft of second. But catcher Frank Matusek's throw was on the money for USC and Pietsch was easily nailed at second-until shortstop Eddie Ford gave him a reprieve by dropping Matusek's strike. Third baseman Bruce Pudlock followed Ford's miscue in similar fashion by allowing a ground ball )verwhelm :te Falls of NC State, also by the score of 9-0. Carolina started out like they might - be returning to their previous day's showing when top-seeded Kevin McCarthy dropped the first set, but he came back to win and the entire squad followed his lead. The split of matches in North Carolina left the USC team with a record of 22-2 on the season. I Coach Ron Smarr indicated that he was- quite pleased with the manner in which the Gamecocks came back to defeat NC State. USC embarks on a road trip later this week, on which the Gamecocks will have to tangle with Northwest ern on Thursday, Wisconsin, DePaul and Notre Dame on the fol lowing three days. Carolina returns home next week for three straight home matches. Klitenic's father, a prominent Washington area lawyer, serves as an administrative judge with the Interstate Commerce Commission and his son plans to study pre-law at USC.
