At the moment Dietzel has placed three quarterbacks-Jeff Grantz, Lyn Rushing and Dobby Grossman-ahead of the rest. He started at defensive i back last year. I "Last year we had to have him i on defense because we had so a many holes to fill," Dietzel said. "This year we have guys who have had a year of experience at defensive back, so we can afford to i move him to running back. He does a some things when he's running the i ball that I just can't teach." C Dietzel said he thinks the - Gamecocks must have six good r running backs to run the veer ef fectively. He's sure who three of r the running backs will be, but is still looking for the other three. He said Jay Lynn Hodgin, r Tommy Amrein and Zipperly were certain to see action regularly. Veer listed Randy Spinks, Russ Jackson and Ian Mofford, a transfer fresh man from Canada, as the leading candidates for the other three spots. Dietzel believes the veer is an easy offense to implement. "The veer is a simple thing to teach," he said. "It's a simple offense but it takes a lot of repitition to learn to do it well. "It has so many variations. In a regular offense the play is called in the huddle. With the veer the play isn't decided until after the ball is snapped." In the veer, even more so than another offense, quarterback is the most difficult position to teach. "The quarterback is in the middle of all those options," Dietzel said. "The real test is to see who can execute the options better than the other. Luckily we have three good quarterback candidates." Now all he has to decide is who the- best one is. mson necocks scored two more runs in the fifth to break the deadlock produced by White's shot.
