Teams If you are a sports enthusiast then your day is coming on f Saturday, because the USC t Athletic Department has a com- t plete day of sports activities slated I for them. Carolina's baseball, football and F track Gamecocks all see activity in v the second annual "Day of the r Gamecock." ' Smarr Sati With Tean Carolina's tennis team, playing t "just about as well as we are a capable of" according to coach u Ron Smarr, is now 21-1 on the season but faces its biggest challenge of the season to date this weekend, taking powerful North Carolina in Chapel Hill. "We have been very pleased with the way our players, especially the younger ones, have been per forming lately." said Smarr. "They have really played about as well as I feel we can in our last two matches against Clemson and Georgia Tech (USC defeated the Tigers, 6-3, and beat the Yellow Jackets, 8-1). Both teams were ranked ahead of us prior to the season, but our squad responded to the challenge and came through under pressure as they have all season." "But we really have a challenge facing us in North Carolina Friday," admitted Smarr, "They are ranked 5th in the nation, have beaten Georgia at Georgia and a good Florida team and we should really have our hands fulls. Also, we take on N.C. State up there Saturday so it will probably be a busy, competitive weekend." If there have been any keys to the fine Gamecock record to date, they would probably be depth and the play of a couple of younger players. USC has been especially tough all the way down their singles lineup, led by freshmen Jeff Kefalos and Andreas Huf schmid in the number three and four spots respectively. Kefalos, a former three-time West Virginia high school champ from Parkersburg, has posted a 21 1 individual match record, while Hufschmid, a native of Geneva, Switzerland who only enrolled in school second semester, is even better with an undefeated 21-0 slate. The two have also paired to run up a 19-2 mark as the number two doubles team. "Depth has been one of our real assets this season," admits Smarr, "We don't have a real great player, but we do have a strong six-man team. We feel our strength down the line, plus our squad's winning attitude and team spirit, have helped make our record what it is." Senior Kevin McCarthy and junior Brian Desatnik give USC strength at the top of the lineup in both singles and doubles, while senior Doc Malloy has returned from the service to post a 19-2 record as the team's number five player. The Eagles of Georgia Southern will provide the toughest com petition of the year thus far for the Gamecocks as they are ranked fifth in the national pools for baseball teams. Georgia Southern earned that ranking with their fine play, as entering this week's games the Eagles claimed no less than 12 players with batting averages over the prestigious .300 mark, and they owned an 18-2 won loss mark. At 2:30 Saturday afternoon, the football Gamecocks take over the activities as they will engage in a scrimmage game. Several positions are being contested for, including quar terback, as the football team is now about halfway through their "Day of the Gam 10:30 a.m. Baseball v! 2:30 p.m. Football te 5:30 p.m. Track vs. tion Present I 'Day' spring practice.
