Carolina has only two weeks of
spring football practice left, and
Paul Dietzel is still uncommitted
as to who will be quarterbacking
the new veer offense on a regular
basis this fall.
At the moment Dietzel has
placed three quarterbacks-Jeff
Grantz, Lyn Rushing and Dobby
Grossman-ahead of the rest. But

a Tom Zipperly, who was the best
a running back on the freshman

I "Last year we had to have him

"This year we have guys who have
had a year of experience at
defensive back, so we can afford to
i move him to running back. He does
a some things when he's running the

C Dietzel said he thinks the

still looking for the other three.
He said Jay Lynn Hodgin,

listed Randy Spinks, Russ Jackson
and Ian Mofford, a transfer fresh
man from Canada, as the leading
candidates for the other three
spots.
Dietzel believes the veer is an
easy offense to implement. "The
veer is a simple thing to teach," he
said. "It's a simple offense but it
takes a lot of repitition to learn to
do it well.
"It has so many variations. In a
regular offense the play is called in
the huddle. With the veer the play
isn't decided until after the ball is
snapped."
In the veer, even more so than
another offense, quarterback is the
most difficult position to teach.
"The quarterback is in the middle
of all those options," Dietzel said.
"The real test is to see who can
execute the options better than the
other. Luckily we have three good
quarterback candidates."
Now all he has to decide is who
the- best one is.

Mike Johnson produced the runs
for the victory margin when he
smashed his first career homerun

The win raised USC's record on
the season to 13-11.
Carolina's batting leader, John

game when Graham hit him with a

the .333 hitter retire to the
sidelines.
Graham struck three Carolina
