Sickle Cell anemia afflicts about 50,000 people in '*e United States, predominantly blacks. A disease of the red blood cells, it can be painful and deadly. A part of the black man's African heritage, the sickle cell trait was advantageous because it provided protection against malaria, which was a prominant killing disease in central Africa. The sickle cell disease is inher ited from parents who carry the sickle cell trait, according to a re port of South Carolina Board of Health, Bureau of Maternal and Child Care. About eight per cent of the black population in the United States, or one person in 12 carry the trait. A person can generally go through life without knowing he has the trait, but the carrier can create the disease if he marries another carrier. The trait-carrying parent has both a sickle gene and a normal gene. If each parent gives the child a sickle gene, the disease is created. For a child with sickle cell anemia a series of crises occur. The red cells transmit oxygen throughout the body. "When the cells become sickled, they-lose their normal rub bery, pliable form and have diffi culty circulating in the body, according to the report by the health board. The cells may clump together in the blood vessels, cutting off circu lation. The body, trying to compen sate for the slow circulation, pro duces more sickled cells to clump in the vessels. Treatment for the disease is pre ventive. Some of the symptoms are swelling of the joints, caused by blocked vessels and accompanied by severe pain, low hemoglobin caused by diminished oxygen trans port and fatigue.
