Dorm Visitation
Stroud S
President Pro Tempre Larry
Stroud spoke in favor of
changing the dorm visitation
policy at USC during an
address to students Tuesday
night.
Stroud, who is a candidate
for Vice President of the Stu
dent Body, proposed the
change allowing the individual
dorms to set up their own rules
concerning visitation.
Senator Allen Lawhead,
chairman of the Off Campus
Student Affairs committee,
endorsed Stroud's candidacy
saying, "This proposal shows
that he is capable of serving
both on campus and off campus
students effectively. Larry
Stroud is, in my opinion, by far
the most qualified candidate."
Stroud, commenting on the
proposed change, went on to
say that he was "not using this
as a campaign platform or pro
mise", but that he and other
senators were presently draw
ing up a bill for this purpose.

The money will be used for

$300 in donations mostly from busi

according to Chris Askew, who
along with Phillip Newsom planned
the non-stop game which starts
today.
Askew said more than 500 stu

have signed as participants in the

The goal of the marathon game
is to raise $2,000 for donation to the
Sickle Cell Foundation. Through
Wednesday night the two frater
nities had collected about $400.
Sickle Cell anemia afflicts about
50,000 people in '*e United States,
predominantly blacks. A disease of
the red blood cells, it can be painful
and deadly.
A part of the black man's African
heritage, the sickle cell trait was
advantageous because it provided
protection against malaria, which
was a prominant killing disease in
central Africa.
The sickle cell disease is inher
ited from parents who carry the
sickle cell trait, according to a re
port of South Carolina Board of
Health, Bureau of Maternal and
Child Care. About eight per cent
of the black population in the United
States, or one person in 12 carry the
trait. A person can generally go
through life without knowing he has
the trait, but the carrier can create
the disease if he marries another
carrier.

kie Cell Anemia
The child inherits a pair of genes
from his parents for a hemoglobin
type. The trait-carrying parent has
both a sickle gene and a normal
gene. If each parent gives the child
a sickle gene, the disease is created.
For a child with sickle cell anemia
a series of crises occur. The red
cells transmit oxygen throughout
the body. "When the cells become
sickled, they-lose their normal rub
bery, pliable form and have diffi
culty circulating in the body,
according to the report by the
health board.
The cells may clump together in
the blood vessels, cutting off circu
lation. The body, trying to compen
sate for the slow circulation, pro
duces more sickled cells to clump
in the vessels.
Treatment for the disease is pre
ventive. Some of the symptoms are
swelling of the joints, caused by
blocked vessels and accompanied
by severe pain, low hemoglobin
caused by diminished oxygen trans
port and fatigue. The heart was
affected in some patients, accord
ing to the report. Others may have
strokes or seizures.
