Jones E> BY ERNIE KASTNER Gamecock Staff Writer The only fees directly related to the student activity fees that were raised last year were for the improvement of health services, according to Thomas F. Jones, USC President. Tim McConnell, senate president, said in an interview last week that the fees were raised without the senate knowing about them. Health services -are not consi dered part of the student activity fees, Jones said. The raise in fees was needed to hire more doctors, improve facilities and to make all health services more adequate to fit the needs of students. These fees are consi dered student service fees, not stu dent activity fees and are handled by the USC administration. The stu dent government prepares a budget and it is submitted to this office. "I review the budget and alprove it or I send it back. The simple fact is that student activity fees have not been raised." The USC bulletin, 1971-1973, states that academic fees for South Carolina residents attending USC are $275 per semester; for non resident students the fees are $630. "This $10 raise, the only raise," Jones said, "is the raise mentioned for improving health services on campus." The USC budget by law has to break even, Jones added.
