Win ov ends si By Skip Courtney The Gamecocks completed a successful road trip with their win Monday night, their third straight road victory. Their road record moved two games above the .500 mark, to 7-5. Carolina's victory over St. Bonaventure on Saturday af ternoon was a one-point thriller, 75-74. The Niagara game on Monday night was a more com fortable 10-point win for USC, 84-74. The game with the Bonnies started as a close contest, but the Gamec9cks soon found themselves down by 11 on three occasions. The Gamecocks attempted to battle back without the services of Danny Traylor and Alexander. English, who were in foul trouble. The team managed to overcome the deficit, Jim X.i.Ji m | S. The second half stayed close throughout, with the Indians never gaining more than a five-point edge. Any type of lead that St. Bonaventure was able to build was always cut back down again. "The big turnabout was when Traylor pulled down four or five key rebounds. Things began to change from there," remembered Mike Dunleavy. English had fouled out at that time and this left Traylor to do a major part of the rebounding. He rose to the occasion and gave the Gamecocks a one-point lead which they never lost again. Before today, I had only hit four of 13 and today I hit three of six," said Greiner. Greiner had missed two free throws about four minutes earlier which would have closed the gap. "I didn't think we had it wrapped up until, with nine seconds to go, I hit two free throws to put us up by three," said Dunleavy. The Bon nies did sink another basket but that did not affect the final out come. St. Bonaventure Coach Larry Weise saw the Gamecocks take away what looked for awhile to be the 200th victory of his career. The Gamecocks also handed. the In dians their second loss in a row at home , a feat which had never happened before in the history of the school. In Monday night's game the Gamecocks dealt the Niagara Purple Eagles a much easier loss than was Saturday's game with St. Bonaventure. Niagara and USC played just about even through the first half but Carolina slowly began to pull away. The Gamecocks led by as many as 13 at one point, and when the final buzzer sounded, the Gamecocks had won by 10 points, 84-74. Traylor continued to put on a fine display on the road with 23 points and 13 rebounds in Monday's game. He also dazzled on defense with eight blocked shots. "Traylor is coming into his own and helped to save the Bonnies' game," commented Coach Frank McGuire. Traylor said the game was, "One of the roughest games I had ever played." His reaction to his improved play of the two weekend games was, "I think the more anybody scores the happier he is." The team plays three home games before going on the road for their last away game of the year, against Notre Dame. "They are a young team and they are tired," said McGuire. Brian Winters thought, "Things have really come together. We are putting together a well. balanced offense which helps - so that a team can't hope to stop one player and expect us to lose. Three straight on the road is great and I'm so glad to be going back to Columbia." Villanova will be at the Coliseum on Saturday for an afternoon game to be televised on regional TV.
