Township Auditorium Jim Hersh Postseason prospects Going into the final 30 days of their regular season basket ball schedule, Carolina still must be rated a strong conten der for one of the at-large berths to the NCAA Eastern Regionals. Before the start of the season it seemed nearly impossible to even consider the Gamecocks for the NCAA play-offs. However, USC has come a long way since their feeble per formance against Tennessee in December and right now they are one of the top Eastern independents. Two of the three Eastern at-large bids are virtually wrapped up. Barring a complete collapse, St. John's and Providence will be getting offers from the NCAA at the end of the month. The Friars and Redmen have been in the top twenty all year and both have beaten Carolina. So the remaining berth will be fought for by every other major independent in the East. Right now Carolina, Virginia Tech, Villanova and Duquesne are the frontrunners for that precious bid. Of the four Virginia Tech has the best record, but their schedule is rather weak and they don't get the press coverage the other three get. Should Carolina win their next four games-at Toledo, St. Bonaventure and Niagara, and then back home with Villanova--they'll have the inside track to the final bid. There are several reasons for this. First, they will have beaten every major Eastern indepen dent they have played with the exception of St. John's, Provi dence and Virginia Tech. The first two will get bids and VPI probably will not, because of the reasons listed above. Second, Carolina has been to the NCAA's for the past two seasons and the NCAA has a history of leaning to the teams that have been there before. Third, there exists the natural rivalry between USC and the ACC which helps the publicity for the Eastern Regionals. They took advantage of it last year with USC vs. North Carolina and they wouldn't mind doing it again. Nonetheless, the NCAA could spoil Carolina's chances by moving either Jacksonville or Florida State from the Mideast Regional, where they have been paired in previous years, to the Eastern Regional. The Mideast has four inde pendents deserving a chance for the NCAA championship. Marquette, Cincinnati, Florida State and Jacksonville would all be top drawing cards, but to take advantage of them the NCAA would have to move one to a different region, the East or Midwest. They definitely won't move Marquette since they tried it a couple years ago and Al McGuire took his team to the NIT instead of moving to a different region. So the logical thing to do would be to move either Jackson ville or Florida to the East, which case USC would be left out in the cold, or to the Midwest. Assuming all of the Mideast teams stay in the Mideast Regional, Carolina has an excellent chance to be back in the N CAA play-offs for the third straight year.
