Mungo, a member of USC's Board of Trustees, grew up during the post depression era. "My father died when I was ten or eleven. We were very poor," Mungo said. "I lived in Bethune, S. C., but finished my last two years of high school in Rock Hill. Oh hell, I worked my way through high school and college -- in those damn mills. But everybody did." In Rock Hill, Mungo worked as a radio announcer. Finishing high school in 1945, he entered the army for two years and then enrolled at USC. "I don't bull shit my kids. If either one had a problem, he'd call me right this minute," Mungo said. "1 don't think I'll ever grow old. I think it's sad when you grow old in spirit and in mind,'' Mungo said. Well-tanned and wearing moderately long hair, Mungo works out six days a week, lift's weights and runs two and a half miles a day. He enjoys fishing on the Santee-Cooper "even if the fish aren't biting," he said. "If you let your busi ness own you, you're a dead son of a bitch. (See MUNGO. Page 3)
