Concert committe Empty t BY GRACIE PEARMAN A vacant chairman's seat, an empty budget, and a constrict ing form of concert approval face the Cconcert Committee this semester, according to Chuck Cromer, acting commit tee chairman. The committee will elect a new chairman this Tuesday night with the approval of the University Union Executive Council. This council is made up of all the chairmen of the vari ous union committees. The vacancy was left by former chairman Ian Davis who did not return to school this semester because of "academic problems," Cromer said. When asked about the handling of the $17,000 that the concert com mittee is allotted by the Student Allocations Committee, Cromer said that Davis was not chair man last spring when the con cert program was set up for this year. i BIC Quality European B: Manufactured By: ( Paris-Sport, Falcon-li In Cohi C AT E'S C Box Cedar Terrace 6420 Sumter Ph 776 1:15 to 8p.m. A e )udget on Although he and Davis disap proved of the concert schedule for last fall, Cromer said there was no way they could break the contracts. The few concerts that were presented last fall cost the USC student body all the funds allotted for the entire year, mainly because of the substan tial losses on the Kris Kristof ferson show and a $5,500 to $6,500 loss on the Beach Boys show. For the past two months the committee has been trying to book the Grateful Dead for a March 9th show. This week, Cromer said they found out they had been dealing with a phoney agent. Now the committee is trying to get the "Dead" for an April 6th show, but they anticipate trouble getting the booking approved by the executive council. Fire dama( If you heard church music com ing from the USC Law School Auditorium yesterday, your ears weren't deceiving you. Green Street United Methodist Church transferred their regular Sunday Services to the USC Law School Auditorium because a fire damaged the sanctuary early Tues day morning. The blaze, which the Rev. Murray Yarborough, the church pastor said resulted from an "improper com bustion furnance". Columbia Fire Department offi cials estimated damages as high as $30,000-$45,000 to the building and $15,000 to contents, but the cost could reach $150,000 if a new roof is needed. The church, which successfully fought a university attempt to demolish it in an urban renewal pro ject two years ago and recently completed a $5,800 renovation prog ram, ironically found a temporary sanctuary provided by the univer PENT N At The HETTI__ ved with garlic, bread and chef s Buy one dinner - get one free~ 7ednesday 3 p.m. 'ti at the intersection of 37 cross from the Ramaa oobems N dA f the troubled Concert Co-r tes church sity. Yarborough said the fire would not change the church's refusal to sell the building, which is surrounded by the USC campus. "We will not sell out; we will repair the building and be back in business as soon as possible", said Yar borough. Rev. Yarborough said approx imately 50-125 USC students attend services at Green Street Methodist. "The Law School Auditorium worked out real well. The building was nice and convenient especially for some of the older people to walk to. IGHT nise -1.5 alad. '1 midnight 8 and I-26 Inn0
