Senate BY CHERE COPE "If the SGA could get the support of the off campus stu dents, the whole university would have a better deal," said Allen Lawhead, chairman of the off-campus student affairs committee of Student Senate. Allen said the problem basi cally lies in student suppport of the student government. "Sixty-three per cent of the stu dents live off campus, and if they don't support the govern ment, it is impossible to do any thing in the senate the problem of the off campus student." One of the main problems is the parking problem. "When a student can barely make it to school on time, he tends to be frustrated. He doesn't even think about trying to get on campus for a movie6e. It just is a hassle." There are several parking lots near or on campus, but the cost of parking is high, and a sticker doesn't guarantee a place to park. "Most activities are advertised or geared to Russell House," Allen said. "Many off-campus students just come to the uni versity to go to class, and don't even get to stop by Russell House. We are trying to get bulletin boards put up in several of the parking lots of places where the off-campus student usually goes. They would cost about $75.00 each, and the money would allocated by the office of business affairs. It would involve alot of red tape, but we really need it." There's not a seperate cen tralization of activities, Allen continues. "The dorms have programs planned, and a dorm government, which I'm sure the students can relate to more than they can the student govern ment. The Student Senate sees another problems for the stu dent living off campus: if an off campus senator resigns or is removed from office, there is no way in which another senator can be appointed to take his place, other than the complica tions of an election. "In dorm government, the president of the dorm appoints another senator if one is needed." Allen said. "There is no provision for this for the off-campus senator. Another alternative is to establish some type of a off campus group to provide the same function of dorm government. They would provide speakers and have spe cial programs, and perhaps be able to relate better to the stu dent living off-campus." Dean Eslitzer, in charge of off campus students is working to establish an off campus student's lounge, where the stu dent can come between classes and have a place to put his books, or just sit and talk. "Other services for the off cam pus student include an informa tion table in Russell House every Wednesday from 4 to 5. "The table will be manned by off campus senators," accord ing to AAllen. "They will give out information as to what the Senate is doing for the off cam pus student, as well as find out what the off campus student needs.
