Anti-aborti BY SUSAN PAQUET A program on abortion was presented by the Catholic students on campus Tuesday night. Featured speaker for the presentation was the Rev. Duffy of Charleston. The Reverend is an outspoken advocate of adoption as an alter native to abortion and has carried his opposition of legalized abortion in S. C. to its legislators. A worker for the Catholic charities of Charleston, the Rev. Duffy is involved in finding homes for children whose parents are unwilling or unable to care for them. He commented to those pre sent that as an agent in the adoption process he knew of thirty couples in his own diocese wishing to adopt a child. This was his rebuttal to the argument that abortion is the ' - best answer to the problem of an unwanted child. The Rev. Duffy f said the children in childrens homes had at least one parent liv ing. "According to state law the \ parents must sign the necessary papers to make the child eligible for adoption;" he added. The Father's major theme in his opposition to abortion was "the right to life" which he pointed out as a basic right of man. He went on to add "a human's right to life super cedes a woman's right to privacy." By this he meant that a woman's rights ended when they trampled on the right to life of the fetus. He talked about the possibil ity of a precedent which might lead to the legalization of mercy killings. The Rev. Duffy pointed out that in Florida, a bill was introduced titled "Dignity of Death" which would make legal the killing of individuals whose existence was deemed as non-beneficial. Narrated slides were presented on the question of at what stage a fetus should be considered a human being. A movie followed showing an actual abortion. Questions following the program showed a negative response towards the reverend's opinions. Several protests were levied against the one-sided presentation. The omission of any reference to the social implications and emo tional problems a woman faces if she has to go through an unwanted pregnancy was also cause for con cern. Several women present, involved with Abortion Hotline, a local counseling and referrel ser vice, were vehement about what they termed the moralistic approach that was taken. The position of the Roman Catholic church was another area which was cause for discussion. One femal participant questioned the inconsistencies of the Church by stating that "...Catholic boys were ordered by the church to refuse to go to war while Catholic girls are condemned for having an abortion." "A joint request was made to the National Endowment of the Arts for $30,000 to develop a plan for the complex," Brunton said. "The Museum has a block around it to develop and the University has the land around McMaster. The University and the Museum have had close ties in the past and this way we could combine the best of the two institutions." Brunton also said that improve ments in campus lighting should begin soon. "We had studies done to find out the most critical areas on campus, and first priority will go to the Women's Quad. New lights have been authorized for this area and work should begin when the materials get here." Other recent campus improve ments include installment of fire alarms on the Horseshoe. "Fire alarms were ordered last spring but because of delays, they did not get here until recently and were instal led last week.
