Schm Freshman Tom Schmidt led the Garnet team to a decisive 70-43 win over the Black squad in the USC swim team's annual intrasquad meet, held Thursday at the USC pool. The highly regarded Schmidt, a native of San Reno, California, cap tured three first place finishes, all in meet record times, to pace the Garnet squad. Schmidts wins came in the 100, 500 and 200 meter frees tyle events. The overall strength of the Gar net squad proved to be evident as they rolled up 10 first place finishes as compared to only three for the Blacks. The intrasquad meet is consi dered to be the final tuneup for the Carolina swimmers before they start their season Thursday in the Atlantic Coast Relays in Raleigh. Gray's performance came in the 200 yard butterfly in which he was clocked in 2:06.3. Other first place wins for the Gar net squad were provided by Glen Spears in the 50 yard freestyle, the 400 freestyle relay team and Gary Wetherhold as he took the one met ter diving event. There were no meet records set by any members of the Black squad, as they could manage only three wins against the powerful Garnet squad. Chip Newman won the 100 yard freestyle, his specialty, Kim Douglas took the 200 breastroke and teammate James Tingen captured the three meter dive. Troup's drive was overshadowed as it took Strock just five pass attempts following the kickoff to propell VPI into a 21-7 lead. Troup could not match that one drive again however as his protec tion faultered immediately after wards and the transfer quarterback sustained a hand injury early in the third quarter. "We had different things go wrong," said Troup. "I would over throw and undershoot some passes and other passes were just dropped." Dietzel explained why he turned from Grossman to Troup so early in the game, "There was a strong wind out there and Dobby was hav ing some trouble throwing into it, but Troup's arm is so strong that the wind just didn't bother him. And I thought he did a commendable job when he was in there."
