Freshman Tom Schmidt led the
Garnet team to a decisive 70-43 win
over the Black squad in the USC
swim team's annual intrasquad
meet, held Thursday at the USC
pool.
The highly regarded Schmidt, a
native of San Reno, California, cap
tured three first place finishes, all
in meet record times, to pace the
Garnet squad. Schmidts wins came
in the 100, 500 and 200 meter frees
tyle events.
The overall strength of the Gar
net squad proved to be evident as
they rolled up 10 first place finishes
as compared to only three for the
Blacks.
The intrasquad meet is consi
dered to be the final tuneup for the
Carolina swimmers before they
start their season Thursday in the
Atlantic Coast Relays in Raleigh.
Casey Claflin was the only other
swimmer on either squad to win two
events, taking both the 200
individual medly and the 200 back
stroke, although his times were
short of meet records.

which he was clocked in 2:06.3.
Other first place wins for the Gar

There were no meet records set

passes for 70 yards and a touchdown
to give Carolina its closest deficit
of the game at 13-7.
Troup's drive was overshadowed
as it took Strock just five pass
attempts following the kickoff to
propell VPI into a 21-7 lead.
Troup could not match that one
drive again however as his protec
tion faultered immediately after
wards and the transfer quarterback
sustained a hand injury early in the
third quarter.
"We had different things go
wrong," said Troup. "I would over
throw and undershoot some passes
and other passes were just
dropped."
Dietzel explained why he turned
from Grossman to Troup so early
in the game, "There was a strong
wind out there and Dobby was hav
ing some trouble throwing into it,
but Troup's arm is so strong that
the wind just didn't bother him. And
I thought he did a commendable job
when he was in there."
After the offense again stagnated
under the direction of Troup and the
game appeared out of hand Dietzel
turned to his third field general on
the afternoon, freshman quarter
back Jeff Grantz. Grantz experi
enced the most measurable success
against the Tech team as he com

yards and a scoring toss. He also
