Caroli By JIM HERSH Sports Writer Carolina's cross-country team is one of the favorites to win the South Carolina Intercol legiate Cross-country Meet, Tuesday at Furman. What we had to have was a couple of independent back-to-back freshman teams that could participate as varsity football players. USC coach Bill McClure, sees Baptist, who won the meet last year, as the team to beat, but he says that he has confidence in his own team "Baptist is the toughest team entered in the meet," said McClure, "and Clemson can also be tough. But I think we have a good team and if we run as well as we have at time this year we are capable of winning the meet." From Page 9 Dietzel noted that there are dif ficulties recruiting top-notch players to a school that has no winn ing tradition to speak of and has only one bowl appearance in its recent football history. "With this freshman team and another one, if we then can't hold our own and win more that our share against any opponent, then I could term our whole program in football a failure." Dietzel then stated, "It is only those with tremendous faith who can keep their eyes on the target that succeed in the ruggard war. We've gone through some real hell here at Carolina. I will be the first to admit that.
