Record performat Wolfpa BY DOUG WILLIAMS Sports Editor RALEIGH--North Carolina State's 42-24 vic tory over USC Saturday was game of records. For the a'mecocks, it was just nother frustrating dance to tune that is becoming creasingly old as the peeks wear on. By racking up 105 yards n total offense during the irst period, the Wolfpack pet one school record for ffense in a single season; at :39 of the initial quarter, tate got its 168th first own, setting another tecord; Bruce Shaw's pass to t the end of the first half oke Roman Gabriel's pingle-season record for passing. State won the toss f the coin for the seventh ime in eight games, and took the opening kick for the eighth straight week, both of which must be some sort of school mark. This is to take nothing from the Carolina effort, which was quite ssibly its best of the season. The mecocks fought back from a 14-3 deficit, taking a 17-14 halftime lead, and battled back from a 21-17 State lead for a 24-21 advantage with 8:40 remaining in the third quarter. But the Wolfpack, plagued with an inconsistent passing game, kept sending a bevy of talented runners into the tiring USC defense late in the game, scoring two fourth quarter touchdowns, in second in the final minute of play, to make a game that had been tight seem like a runaway. State's trio of sparkling runners tan Fritts, Willie Burdon and Charley Young--accounted for 293 9f the team's 330 rushing yards. ritt's, who won the Dick Christy ward as State's outstanding per ormer, earned 130, Burdon got 95 #nd Young, 68. But USC was not without its individual starts. Tom Zipperly returned a kickoff 98 yards for a Score in the second period after the Wolfpack had taken a 14-3 lead. This single play gave the Gamecocks uch-needed momentum that Aidn't .disappear until late in the hird quarter, when State took a 28 24 advantage. ikeHagardhad one of his bet day i aCarolina uniform, grabbing seven passes for 61 yards; Marty Woolbright had six recep tions for 57 and Jackie Brown caught four for 40. Dobbie Grossman proved he could throw the ball, completing 14 ~29 for 183 yards, including apicture perfect scoring toss to sophomore Tom Amrein for 30 yards, giving cfarolina a 24-21 lead. If one play had to be singled out as a turning point, it came at 3:15 ~of the third period, after Carolina had taken the lead for the last time. "These are not whimisical data, these are facts and I challange anyone to dispute them. In our fourth year at Carolina, using Atlan tic Coast Conference recrL:ting (rules), we beat every school in the ACCthat we played and won the championship and went to a bowl (the Peach Bowl in Atlanta). "In the previous four seasons at Carolina during which time we could use people we had recruited using ACC recruiting rules we have a record against ACC schools of 17 wins, seven losses. That sounds like pretty fair success against people who are using the same kind of 'marbles' that you are shooting. "During that same span of time, 1968 through 1971, to out of-conference schools, we won five games while losing 13. Sure we were beating ACC opponents, but I can't be satisfied wvith the mediocre suc cess we have overall. "Sticking with the ACC rules, there was no way we were ever going to improve Carolina's foot ball stature. When we got it was too late to have any effect in that year, (See DIETZEL, Page 10) AMERICAN EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH CONSULTANTS Largest available collection of reference reports from St.90 per page. Whereas State held an )verwhelming margin in team rush ing, 330 yards to 78 (in 33 carries) for the Gamecocks. USC's secon dary, which Holtz admittedly feared, shut off the highly touted Shaw and his backup man, Gary Cle ments. Through the air, the Wol fpack conjured up a mere 85 yards, as compared to Carollina's 228. State had 25 first downs, USC 21; there were nine punts in the game, five by USC; both teams were assessed virtually the same amount of yards in penalties. But a solid ground game kills the clock, and a ground game as awesome as State's can't help but put points on the board. It did both with amazing con sistency. For a coach who had just beaten his former teacher, State's Lou Holtz didn't seem particularly happy. "We did not play well," he said. "There was poor pass protec tion, and we weren't throwing well. But they got after us well. Their sec ondary did a good job. "I know we can throw the ball," he continued; "We've got to. And you bet that all next week we'll be working on it. People were open, and we missed them. But Shaw did a good job in handling the run. But I'll guran-damn-tee that we'll be throwing the ball next week." Shaw, who suffered three inter ceptions, was also not overly con tented with his shwoing. "I don't know. Maybe I'm color blind. I threw to the wrong colored uniforms out there today. We had the guys open. But South Carolina has a good line and put on a lot of pressure. "We had seen their secondary on film, and knew they were good and quick and good tacklers. They react well. We wanted to keep the ball short, but went long every once in a while to keep them honest." Fritts, who transfered from Mur ray State after one year, knew all about Carolina's strong defensive unit. "But their offense surprised me. I thought their defense was really sound, but that passing attack theirs is tremendous." There was no need to make any mention of a ground game, or lack of it. In any event, for the first time in a bitterly disappointing season, Dietzel's Gamecocks gave a better than-average team a real battle. Carolina came back on two occas sions to regain the lead. But the sheer strength of State--both offen sively and defensively--showed not only on the scoreboard, but on the USC players. John LeHeup struggled off the field on crutches; Chan Beasley was in a neck brace; Rick Brown and Rick Anthony suf fered injuries during the game that took them out of action for some time. A score like 42-24 doesn't sound too good in a season of scores like 35-6, 21-0 and 21-8. And the score really doesn't indicate the closeness rf the game. Wake Forest is next week. They rate with Appalachian State, if that is humanly possible, and USC should win it. If moral vic tories are to he savored, the loss to state is surely one. But moral vic tories don't show upin the stand ings. Because even a tie is better than a loss.
