Sports Editor RALEIGH-"As has been the case all year long, we were just an ace away today, just one half step away from being an excellent football team," said USC Coach Paul Dietzel following his team's 42-24 setback at the hands of N. C. State Saturday. The missing ace from trom trans forming Dietzel's 2-5 squad into an 'excellent' football team on Satur day, was the complete disappear ance of what has previously proved to be the strong point of the Carolina attack: their defense. The Gamecock defense wilted in the face of State's potent offensive attack, as they surrendered 415 yards in total offense to the Wolf pack. State's rushing game took advantage of the USC defensive lapse as they piled up 330 yards and accounted for all the State scores. "We're. really hurting on defense," said Dietzel. Town Men, Bates, Veterans, Vols, Alpha Tau Omega and Phi Dappa Sigma all have unblemished records, as the football season draws to a close. In other intramural action, Phil Delpopalo of Bates defeated Dudley Horton of Town Men to capture the residence hall singles ping-pong championship.
