Winters hit a jumper with 3:27 remaining in the contest to break a 55-55 tie. The Bonnies retaliated by going into a man to man defense for the first time in the game. The first year guard then struck on another jump shot and used the man to man defense to his own advantage, attracting a foul by 6-9 Indian center Glen Price. Winters calmly sunk both shots to give Carolina their winning margin, as Paul Hoffman hit two late layups for St. Bonaventure. But by the time Winters hit Carolina's first field goal eight minutes later, the Bonnies had opened a 17-1 gap.
