Carolina to test Eagle 's win streak By STEVE PARKER Sports Writer Niagara University moves into Carolina Coliseum this evening hoping to continue their impressive 12-game winning streak against the highly-rated Gamecocks. The Purple Eagles almost saw their string of victories concluded Saturday night against Canisius, but they managed to slip through by the close score of 72-71 and capture their 12th straight. Niagara dropped their season opener to Army but then began their onslaught of wins, including four in which the Purple Eagles surpassed the century mark. Winters hit a jumper with 3:27 remaining in the contest to break a 55-55 tie. The Bonnies retaliated by going into a man to man defense for the first time in the game. The first year guard then struck on another jump shot and used the man to man defense to his own advantage, attracting a foul by 6-9 Indian center Glen Price. Winters calmly sunk both shots to give Carolina their winning margin, as Paul Hoffman hit two late layups for St. Bonaventure. ' It was not until 12:01 of the first half that USC could manage to put the ball in the basket from the field. Tom Riker, who played despite an injury to his left hand, connected on one of two shots at the stripe with 47 seconds gone in the game, for Carolina's first point. But by the time Winters hit Carolina's first field goal eight minutes later, the Bonnies had opened a 17-1 gap. Price scored seven points during the offensive spree, and was ably- supported by Vic Thomas' three baskets and four more points by Matt Gantt. After Winters struck, Danny Traylor scored on a layup, Winters followed with another two-pointer then sharp-shooting sophomore Ed Peterson connected on three straight from outside to bring the Gamecocks within three at 18-15. St. Bonaventure reeled off three points before Rick Aydlett hit for USC, as the teams traded baskets for the remainder of the opening period, the Indians carrying a 27-23 advantage into the locker room. Carolina scored the first six points of the final half, gaining a 29-27 lead with 2:47 gone.
