USC center Tom Riker goes high above St. Bonaventure's Carl Jackson (25) and Matt Gantt (35) to get off shot in Carolina's come from behind 61-59 victory Monday night in the Coliseum. Riker, coming off an injured hand which sidelined him against Manhattan, scored nine points in the game. Biddies r for sixth By TEDDY HEFFNER Sports Editor USC's red-hot freshman Gamecocks burned the nets for a 51.6 performance from the floor and let subs finish out the last five minutes of play- as the frosh routed Winston-Salem College, 90 56, Monday night before the var sity win over St. Bonaventure. "That's six in a row," a happy Donnie Walsh said. "The boys have gotten together and we're playing well as a team. "But, I don't think that Winston Salem played ah well as they are capable of playing. But I hope we had something to do with that." Tommy Cox benefited greatly from the passing of Jimmy Walsh for 12 baskets in 19 attempts from the floor to lead the scoring with 29 points. Cox also had 14 rebounds to lead the way. Slick back courtman Jimmy Walsh scored 18 points and dealed out seven assists. George Felton had 11 rebounds and eight points. Non scholarship player Greg Ward chipped in 13 points, giving a big lift in the first half. Walsh was glad to see his team taking command early in the game and not letting up. "Early in the season we were getting behind early in the game," he said. "When you do, you have to play a whole different type of game. It's hard to get the lead when you get behind." The Biddies have lost twice this season. In the opening game of the season Anderson Junior College, undefeated at that time, beat them and then Fort Jackson, unbeaten until the Biddies won a rematch, came out on top. "We played some very good clubs," Walsh said. "Every junior D Style Dining In bbott Drive PAYS A WEEK. - Tom Price , 90-56 re win college we've played has had a major college prospect on the team. Anderson has a fine team and Ft. Jackson was undefeated. Winston-Salem was 7-1 coming into tonight and Gaston and Georgia Southern are good." And, ac cording to Walsh, there is a dif ference between high school and college. "This is their first year in college and they have to get adjusted," he said. "In the beginning we were running and shooting. That's fine at home but on the road you have to take your time. "We're real pleased with the way we have played. Our players have improved a lot since the season started. Also, ' our non scholarship pltyers have helped. Greg Ward and John Kelley have played well. We just haven't had a chance to play everybody because we have been in close games." The dnaline for signn ..p fr. ii Agnew 's play sparks frosh By STEVE PARKER Sports Writer Clyde Agnew is stressing the Importance of defensive basketball to himself, but freshman coach Donnie Walsh and the Biddie squad are presently enjoying the offensive talents of the 6-7 muscleman. "I like to think of myself as a defensive basketball player but I'm probably better as an offensive player," said Agnew. A somewhat sluggish scoring performance against Winsalm Monday night cost Agnew the team scoring lead, as he is now hitting at a 21.6 pace as compared to Tommy Cox's average of 22.2 a contest. Agnew is leading the team in rebounds, snatch Ing down an average of 15 errant shots per game. Quite impressive is Agnew's total of 22 rebounds and 22 points against a larger, more experienced Ft. Jackson team earlier in the year. Of that performance Agnew found the 22 rebounds more important, "Cox (Tommy) and I are really the only two on the team who rebound. Anybody on the team can score, but we need the rebounds," said Agnew. Agnew handles the center position for the Biddies but he is preparing to move to a forward slot for next year's Gamecock squad. "With Danny (Traylor) playing the center slot I'll definitely be moving outside." Certain changes in playing style are dictated in moving outside to the forward postion and Agnew is well aware of the fact, "I'll have to work on my moves. Now I'm working with my back to the basket, but as a forward I'll have to face the basket. I also need to work on my defense."
