FSU p test fox BY DOUG WILLIAMS Sports Editor USC's Gamecocks face perhaps their sternest test thus far in the season, traveling to Tallahassee for a 7:30 clash with the air oriented Florida State Seminoles. The game marks Carolina's entrance into a tough second half of the season. USC's remaining opponents, including Florida State, have accumulated a 20-9 season record so far. The Seminoles have fashioned a 5-1 standing this year. The contest will also have an interesting sidelight. FSU head coach Larry Brown was formerly Paul Dietzel's defensive assistant in the Carolina mentor's years at Lobisiana State, Army and USC. As offensively potent as the Seminoles are, the game could very well turn into a defensive struggle. Florida state ranks 14th in the nation in scoring defense, while the Gamecocks rate 10th nationally in total defense, 11th in rushing defense and 16th in scoring defense. However, it is the explosive offensive attack of the Seminoles that has attracted national notice. Florida State, behind junior quarterback Gary Huff, ranks fourth nationally in passing of fense, gaining 230.5 yards per game in the air. In addition, Huff is the nation's third best quar terback, with 100 completions in 168 attempts for 377 yards and ten touchdowns. Barry Smith has grabbed 20 for 386 yards, three touchdowns and a whopping 19.5 average per catch. State's running game is doubly effective with the passing of Huff. "The bad thing about Florida State," Dietzel said, "is that they get you spread out looking for the pass and that only makes their running game that much better." Arthur Munroe and Paul Magalski spearhead the Seminole ground game. The 210 lb. Magalski has gained 204 yards on 42 carries, while Munroe has picked up 247 on 48 tries. Magalski has accounted for two scores and Munroe has added a third. The Florida State offensive line will have an 11 pound advantage over Carolina's defenders. Roger Minor, 6-3, 233, is the biggest man on a line that averages 217 lbs. Joining Minor on the weak side of the line is J. W. McKinnie, 6-1, 207. The strong side is composed of guard Phil Aronold, 6-0, 211, and tackle Joe Strickler, 6-2, 235. Allen Dees, 6-2, 190, is slated to start at center. The Seminole defense, which has yielded only 62 points in six games, is anchored by weak side linebacker Dan Whitehurst. The 6 3. 214 pound junior has been in on 69 tackles so far this season, 48 of which have been unassisted. Middleguard Larry Strick land, 6-1, 222and Clint Parker, 6-0, 192, join Whitehurst to make up a very capable crew of linebackers. Parker also leads the team in pass interceptions, having nabbed two enemy aerials. FSU's two defensive cor nerbacks, Eddie McMillan and James Thomas have been labeled by. Dietzel as having "Excellent speed and make running or throwing wide very difficult." He also added, "They're as good as we'll face all year." Rover John Lanahan is the second highest tackler on the team, with 34 unassisted tackles among his total of 39. His deep partner, Robert Ashmore, also has two interceptions, to tie Parker for the team lead. The Seminoles' placekicker, Frank Fontes, is just a field goal away from a fourth place tie among all time FSU scoring leaders. The barefoot kicker has scored his 105 point total in less than two years, and has booted 9 13 this season while scoring 41' points.
