He has been busily examining statistics of Florida State in preparation for his first big test of the season. Meanwhile, the outside agitators have been silently watching the progress of the poor prognosticator. Violent threats from as far away as Lamar have greeted. him. Nonetheless, with pen in hand, the GCSS stares his opponents straight in the eye while venturing into another week of predictions. Last week, 34-14-0, .709; for the season, 209-73-3, .741. Things were not looking up in the Soothsayer's den. It was the second week in a row he had fallen below .750 for the national picks. He did get Alabama over Tennessee; but Florida State by 23 over Florida? His scouting was obviously inadequate. The State defense has yeilded few points this season, as their 5-1 record would Indicate. One the other hand, the Gamecocks are looking for their fifth win in a row and sixth of the season. Glenn Morris played perhaps his best game of the season last week, and the running game looked sounder than it has in recent weeks. It will be a close one. Huff's passing could give the USC secondary fits for a while, but then again, the Carolina Bandits could do the same for FSU's overall offense. Georgia Tech has not had the >rward to "He was a real good quar terbach," Morris said of Suggs. "He was smart and read defenses real well. He pointed out a lot of things to me that have helped." When Morris replaced Jackie Young at quarterbacks early in the Georgia Tech game, it was Morris' first real test in varsity com petition. He came in with USC losing 7-0 to the heavily favored Yellow Jackets and played the rest of the way in the 24-7 Gamecock win. "We went into the game knowing that they were heavily favored but we had confidence that we would play a good game against them. I'm just glad I had a chance to play in a big game like that," he said about the victory. A big part of the quarterback's job is to know what the opposing defense will do. "I think the most important thing a quarterback" must do is read defenses," Morris said. * Movies help Morris an ticipate what the defenses will do in a particular game. " We spend about ten hours a week looking at films," he commented. Morris reports that he is able to read defenses better each week as he gains experience. "I am able to see things coming more and more each week," he said. "Last week against Maryland everything fell into place." The critism of the fans toward the offense apparently does not bother Morris. "I guess the fans have a cause to criticize the of fense," 'Morris said. "But I think we do take advantage of the breaks the defense gives us and we are improving each week. Glenn says that the protection of the line is real good. "Early in the Take. It shapes up as an of fensive battle between two fine quarterbacks: Eddie McAshan of Tech and Mike Walker of Tulane. With their passing ability, the outcome of this one is surely up in the air. Georgia Tech 27, Tulane 25. Two Atlantic Coast Conference giants (if any ACC team can be labeled as such) clash when North Carolina and Wake Forest tangle. UNC does not have the offense to compare with Larry Russell and Larry Hopkins of Wake. Only UNC signal caller Paul Miller can come close. But by then, it will be too late. Wake Forest 20, UNC 16. Clemson pulled one of the biggest shocks of the season by putting up quite a defensive show in dropping Duke. It will take more than that to defeat Auburn. Un fortunately for the Tigers, an 18 man defense is illegal. And that's what it will take. Auburn 51, Clemson 14. Florida ? game the linemen have to ex periment and test the defensive linemen out, so the protection may not be quite as good early in the game as it is later," he explained. "The protection in the Maryland game was reali good," he added. "All of the backs are real good blockers," Morris said of the blocking ability of the backs. "I 'd say that Billy Ray Rice and Tommy Simmons may be just a little better because they have more experience." When asked if the coaches en courage him to scramble, Morris said, "They say just to scramble when the protection breaks dowr or if nobody is open. They say to run but if I can't run to eat the ball and not throw it and risk an in. terception." The Carolina coaching staff allows Morris to call most of the 'plays during the course of a game. "In crucial situations the coaches get together and choose the play they think is best," Morris said. "But most of the time they let me call the plays." The Gamecocks often pass more during the second half than during the first half. When asked why this was true, Morris said," Well, it depends on the game plan for that particular game. Against Maryland we went out to establish a running game and that's why we ran a lot in the first half." One of Carolina's favorite pass pat terns is the pass to Jim Mitchell on the flat. This is a dangerous pass because if it is intercepted it may mean a touchdown for the defense. "Jim runs great patterns to get open for the pass," Morris said. "Jim ran what we call a G-pattern. He went down about ten yards, faked to the outside and then went straight up the field. He ran a great pattern to get as wide open as he did," Morris commented. Morris says that he thinks Memphis State played as well defensively as anyone the Gamecocks have faced so far. "'Ibey played a real good game on defense. They hit us harder than anyone we've played." With consecutive games with Florida State, Georgia, and Tennessee, the Gamecocks move into the toughest part of their schedule. "In the past Suuth Carolina has always gotten up for big games," Morris said of the challenge from these three teams. "We enjoy playing good teams and won't have any trouble getting up for them." Personally, Momrs is looking forward to the FSU game -to morrow. "We have never beaten Florida State and they have a real good team this year. They have a great offense and we have our great defense and that should be a great battle," he commented. "And our offense is improving with each game'," he added. Morris is impressed with the Seminoles' defense. "Their defense is real good. Larry Jones, the defensive coach at Tennessee last year, is the head ocach for Florida State. Their defense is the same as what Tennessee usedi when they lost only one game last year. So we know they're good," Morris explained. This year Morris got himself into position to start at quar terback during . the pre-sason practices. Next year four ex perienced quarterbacks will return. Last week Morris hiad probably his best passing day of the year. He completed nine of 16 passes for 146 yards and one touchdown. With more games like this Carolina might surpise alot of people inthe next three weeks.
