On the final series of the game UVa. drove 43 yards on six plays, with Davis going wide to the right for the Cavaliers' final score. By this time, the outcome was hardly in doubt, and few fans remained in the stands. "The defense played fine foot, ball," Dietzel said. "The best, series was when we fumbled down there just before the half ended. We gave them three shots from the ten, then they missed the field goal. "It wasn't a spectacular game by the offense," he continued. "We were not a fired up football team tonight. We played well enough to win, but we weren't nearly as up as we were for Memphis State. All things considered, I am happy." T NIGHT M til Closing E STEAK [NER PINGT*9 IRBSA ABBOTT IVE . "Harris made a great run on that punt return," said the Cavalier coach. "It wasn't that our coverage really broke down, he just earned that touchdown. "Carolina did exactly as we expected. They didn't surprise us anywhere," said Lawrence. "It's just that if you do the things we did, you aren't going to win." "It was mainly psychological," said tailback Kent Merrit. "We fumbled too much, there was the rain and the lights going out. Then we got so far down and had to come back. "When you give away 20 points it's hard to come back," said the 9.5 speedster echoing his coach . "Carolina's defense tried to angle like Michigan," said Merrit, "But we just made too many mistakes and beat ourselves rather than it being their defense so much. A lot of the time it was just individual breakdown in the blocking busting plays." Harrison Davis, replaced Larry Albert at quarterback for Virginia early in the game, but was unable to effectively move the team until the late stages against the Carolina subs. "I couldn't grip the ball too well after I hurt my hand, and that hurt my passing," said Davis. "As far as that rush was concerned, it was inevitable after I stood back there so long." "Now we've just got to cone back against Clemson next week," said Lawrence. "We've done it before and we can do it again."
