C. 29201 FRIDAY, OCTOBER , 1971 Commi rejectii BY JULIE LUMPKIN Staff Writer The Student Senate Wednesday passed a bill which provided for a committee to investigate the feasibility of abolishing final exams and providing alternatives to them. The committee will report its findings by Dec. 1 after consulting faculty and students through surveys and personal interviews. The bill was response to an approved resolution which said "the Student Senate believes that the now dormant student and faculty ingenuity in the area of testing can be aroused to create alternative methods for deter mining the student's grade in a course." It was sponsored by senators Barbara and Greg Ohanesian. The original resolution was amended before passage by eliminating the final clause which read, "be it resolved that all written and oral midterms and final exams which are designed solely by the faculty who possess sole subjective power of the grading of these exams, be abolished." Speaking for the resolution, Vice president Julianne Still tem porarily relinquished the chair and. said "at the Academic Atmosphere Conference (last weekend) it was brought out by President Jones that there are alternative means of teaching. There are lots of areas that can be looked into and there is faculty support." Sen. Tony Daniels said, "the resolution is too much for the Senate to pass right now. I think we should set up a committee to consider the rCsolution." In other business, a committee was formed to investigate the delay of Veterans Aid to veteran students. The committee members are Sens. Latimer, Meagner, Thomasson, Sloan and Eckstrom. Walker: nix to class officers SGA president Harry Walker vetoed the bill that would have provided for class officer elections this fall. Sen. Tony Daniels move to override Walker's veto failed by a vot e of 17-13. Walker said he vetoed it "because I'm against the concept of class officers. "When a stolen or lost bicycle is recovered, the prescence of a decal will enable us to contact the owner. "It is also contemplated that the decal number can be stamped onto the bicycle frame for even more permanent identification," he said. Brunton said that when the University Is able to provide enough bicycle racks, "we plan to restrict bicycle parking to these racks. State of The USC Student Senate passed a resolution Wednesday censuring the State of S.C. A $1 filing fee will be charged to defray election costs. Bob Alexander, dean of student activities, said that the organizations must file an appeal with his office by Oct. 15 if they want to be eligible to use USC facilities. S. C.
