Scoring for USC in the first half were Burke Hayes with a try (three points), Dr. Frank Walton with a conversion (two points) and Bill Black had a try. In the second half the USC ruggers were shut out, with Georgia scoring eight more to leave the field victorious. The leading scorers for USC this season were: Dr. Walton-32 points, Andy Gallin-15 and Clasen-12. The total for the squad was double their opponets: USC-98 and opponents 48. There will be only three ruggers not returning from this year's squad. Clasen feels that next year should be even better. Plus, some B team members will be moving up to the A team. The Gamecock quartet of Dick Harris, Dave Hines, Keith Eidson and Bob Kaczka broke the school record set in the State-Record Relays by two seconds with a time of 3:21.0. They were barely nipped for second by Mayaguez A&M of Puerto Rico, who ran a time identical to Carolina's. In finishing third they beat out 57 teams from throughout the country and posted one of the nation's best times for the sprint medley. Each Gamecock runner came up with a career best time for their individual leg in setting the record. Caldwell's two homers, which gave him five for the season, broke the previous mark of four. Cald well and Butch Anderson each hit four last season and shared the record with three other players, all of whom played prior to 1958. The Gamecocks scored 25 runs Saturday afternoon as they beat Wake twice, 13-7 and 12-3. Friday afternoon in Durham, USC lost to Duke, 13-2. In the opening game against Wa)e, Carolina scored six run* in the last three innings to hold off the Deacons, who erupted for six runs in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 8-7, Carolina. The Gamecocks opened with five runs in the top of the second, then got two in the fourth, one each in the fifth and sixth and four in the top of the seventh. Alan Hilliard, who came on to pitch with two outs in the fifth, was the winning pitcher. His record is 3-3. Alan Gent new swim Athletic Director Paul Dietzel has announced the hiring of a "highly recommended" swimming* coach to replace departing Pete Combes. Alan Gentry, head coach at Georgia for the past three seasons, was signed Thursday as Combes successor. The Southeastern Conference point leader in 1955, Gentry has been in swimming since he graduated from high school. From 1956 to 1962, he handled the double chores of coaching both the Spartanburg County Aquatic Association and Spartanburg High School teams. Gentry then progressed to the University of North Carolina where he was a graduate assistant coach and director of the Homestead Swim School at Chapel Hill from 1962 to 1963. He coached the Stauton Military Academy in Virginia, 1963-64, and the High Point Swim Club in North Carolina in 1964. He did not race the final two races. Sailer had won the championship in each of the past three years. The singlehanded races, which were held at the Columbia Sailing Club at Lake Murray, ended the spring season for the sailing club.
